Light
2
How do we use light? Light enables us to see
We see things because light bounces off them and reflects back into our eyes
3
Plants grow because they convert light energy into chemical energy (glucose) during photosynthesis
4
Light maintains our body clock
Light inhibits production of the hormone, melatonin which encourages sleep This is why you might have trouble sleeping after using devices before bed Melatonin also maintains circadian rhythms, which tell animals when its time to hibernate or reproduce
5
Light Reflection
6
Reflection of light Reflection is what happens when light hits a surface and bounces off. We call beams of light light rays The light rays that travel towards an object, such as a mirror is called the incident ray The light rays that are reflected off of an object, such as a mirror is called the reflected ray
7
Ray box Light Mirror
8
Light Summary Beams of light are called light rays
Light rays travel in straight lines Incident rays travel towards a reflective surface Reflected rays are reflected off of the surface
9
The law of reflection When waves reflect, they obey the law of reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.
11
WHAT IS ENERGY Energy is what an object needs to do work.
Usually seen as movement Energy has No mass No volume And contains no atoms
12
Light is one form of energy…
13
ENERGY CAN TRANSFORM Energy can be transformed. It can change into other forms of energy. Photosynthesis: Light energy Chemical energy (glucose) Solar panels: Light energy Electrical energy. Loudspeakers: Electrical energy Sound energy.
14
Types of Energy Electrical Potential Heat Gravitational Kinetic
Mechanical Nuclear Radiant Chemical Pick a form of energy and find out the answers to the following questions: What is it? How do we use it?
15
Plane Mirrors A plane mirror is a flat mirror
In plane mirrors, the images you see… Appear behind the mirror Have the same dimensions Are laterally inverted
16
Uses Plane mirrors produce more accurate reflections than curved mirrors. This makes them ideal for examining objects. As a result, plane mirrors are used in… Change room and wardrobe mirrors Microscopes Telescopes
17
Draw how letters appear in a plane mirror on page 11
Try this in the mirror… Move your pen from one side to the other Look at the writing in your booklet Wave your left hand. What does a plane mirror do to the images? Draw how letters appear in a plane mirror on page 11
18
Summary Energy Energy has no mass or volume and is what objects need to ‘do work’. This is normally seen as movement Energy can not be created or destroyed, but it can transform Plane mirrors Objects in plane mirrors are laterally inverted (back-to-front) but have the same dimensions They are useful for examining objects
19
HW Fill in the blanks on page 11
20
CURVED MIRRORS (Convex) (Concave)
The passenger side mirror is convex to compensate for the reduced field of vision as a result of the angle. Convex mirrors create a wider field of view but object appear further away. That’s why mirror say ‘objects are closer than they appear’ Concave mirrors magnify images so are used in cosmetic mirrors (Convex) (Concave)
21
Convex and Concave Compare the properties of convex and concave mirrors Complete the table on page 17 Answer the questions, then justify your answers. Research on your laptops!
22
Curved mirrors Convex Curves outward Makes object appear larger
Concave Curves inward (caves in) Images appear smaller Images appear upside down
23
RECAP: Mirrors
24
Terminology so far… Incident ray Reflected ray ‘Normal’ line Energy
Transformation Laterally inverted Plane Convex Concave Focal point Focal length Converge Diverge
25
Summary notes A description of how light reflects off of plane mirrors
A definition of ‘energy’ and an example of an energy transformation A description of how objects appear in plane mirrors A description of how objects appear in concave and convex mirrors At least one example how we use plane, concave and convex mirrors A description of focal length
26
Posters Fold paper into three sections
Need to include plane, convex and concave mirrors How does light reflect? How do images appear? What is it used for? Use your learning objectives and summary notes to help you Finish for homework! Due Wednesday. Kelsey Tia brooklyn

QUIZ Write a definition of energy.
Describe the energy transformation that occurs when we turn on a heater How does light travel? When light reflects off of a plane mirror, two rays are visible. Name them and state their direction. Why are convex mirrors useful to see around corners? 6.) What does lateral inversion mean? 7.) How to objects appear in a concave mirror? 8.) Plants transform light energy into chemical energy. What is the name of this process? 9.) When measuring angles produced by a ray box, where is the ‘normal’ line positioned? 10.) BONUS: What is a focal point?
29
Curved mirror ray diagram
Draw the Normal line Line the middle ray up with the Normal Line the incident ray up with the reflected ray Draw with outline of the mirror Mark the outside incident and reflected rays with a cross Mark where they meet on the mirror Take away the ray box and draw the lines Show the direction of the incident and reflected rays with the correct arrows Label the diagrams convex and concave State which mirror causes rays to converge and which one diverges rays Indicate the focal point Indicate and measure the focal length
30
Transparent, Translucent, Opaque
Focal length does not change with distance from light source
31
Impact on vision We see objects when light bounces off them and reflects back into our eyes. We can see through transparent materials because all the light is able to pass through them on they way to our eyes. Light cannot pass through opaque objects so we are unable to see what is behind them Object behind translucent surfaces are partially visible because some light can pass through.
