Cryogenic assisted machining
2
Background SMART Roadmap Sustainable Manufacturing:
Cleaner processes, with less resource consumption: materials, energy, lubricants, etc. and reduction of generated waste Advanced metal cutting and processing surface quality / finish New regulations 2018 (REACH) Limit environmental impact of lubrication for metal working & increase surface quality & tool life-time
3
Concept Use of liquid N2 or CO2 for difficult-to-machine materials results in… Better surface quality Longer tool-lifetime No environmental impact Cryogenic assisted machining

PROPOSAL INTRODUCTION (I)
Vision: main project goal Develop the cryogenic assisted machining process. Motivation: why the project is necessary Increase tool life time for difficult-to-machine materials by factor 2 to 3 Increase production speed for difficult-to-machine materials by factor 2 or 3 Elimination of environmental impact of coolant (no chemical waste) Elimination of waste disposal costs and part cleaning costs Content: which are the developments to be made in the project Cutting tool development (e.g. coolant channels to be optimized for cryogenic) Optimized cutting conditions for both turning and milling (option: drilling) Further develop current cryogenic machining add-on installation
6
PROPOSAL INTRODUCTION (II)
Expected outcome: descriptions of the results to be obtained in the project Elimination of conventional coolant in difficult-to-machine materials Tool life time and/or production speed increased by factor 2 to 3 Huge environmental impact Impacts: what will be the expected market impact of the project Huge impact on production costs: no more part cleaning, no more waste (coolant) disposal Clean, environmentally friendly process Considerable reduction of cutting tool costs and or production costs
7
PARTNERS Current Consortium: list of partners already involved in the project Sirris: working proof of concept on turning and milling, also challenges to industrialization are identified Air Liquide Partner search: type of partner searched and countries of origin (if necessary). Metal working companies, SML enterprise, Cutting tool developer(s), SML enterprise (Sandvik?) Country: Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Poland, or others.
