Aerobic Respiration D. Mac an Aircinn
2
- The Marathon - If somebody challenged you to a run a race, how should you prepare to win? Practice Eat the right foods Drink the right liquids
3
All living organisms break down sugars to get energy
All living organisms break down sugars to get energy. In humans this breakdown usually occurs with oxygen.
4
To understand how Aerobic Respiration Occurs
Aim: To understand how Aerobic Respiration Occurs You will learn The equation for aerobic respiration. Prove by experiment the following are produced by respiration: Heat is produced during respiration Carbon dioxide is produced by plants and animals during respiration Water is produced during respiration.
6
What is Aerobic Respiration?
The breaking down of sugar (glucose) to produce energy where oxygen is present. Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water+ Energy Compare this to the photosynthesis equation.
7
To show heat is produced during respiration
Why are flasks used? Would you expect the temperture at the start of the experiment to be the same in both flasks? Why are the peas in flask in B boiled? Which flask would have the highest temperature after about 5 days? Will there be any change in the temperature of B? Why/why not?
8
To show carbon dioxide is produced by respiration
Or Sodium Hydroxide
9
To show carbon dioxide is produced by respiration
What is the purpose of the sodium hydroxide (soda lime)? Answer To remove carbon dioxide from the air. Does limewater B go milky? Why/Why not? Answer Limewater B does not go milky proving the carbon dioxide had been removed from the air. What change must you make to jar C if you use a plant? Why? Answer C must have black cover to stop the light. To stop the photosynthesis which uses up carbon dioxide. What happen to limewater D? Answer Limewater D goes milky as carbon dioxide is produced by respiration.
10
To show carbon dioxide is produced by respiration
Sodium Limewater A animal Limewater B Hydroxide Woodlice or earthworms could be used also.
11
To show water is produced by respiration
How could we show water is produced by respiring organisms? What two chemicals can be used to test for water? If water is present what is a positive result for each chemical? Which chemical is the best for this experiment?
