1 Debrief about day 1 first
Debrief about day 1 first. Use the 1-minute paper (Patricia Cross, who has written a lot about assessing learning) if desired: Hand out an index card to each person and ask them to write down the best or most memorable or insightful thing about the previous day, and the thing that is still unclear or “muddy” or that they want more of.

2 “To know is to comprehend
“To know is to comprehend. Do you know, do you comprehend, in this moment, who or what you serve? We must all be serving someone or something. Whom or what are you choosing to serve right now? It takes courage to ask this question of yourself. But without courage, you can’t practice any other value consistently.” —Maya Angelou Create a list of the characteristics of servant leadership (adjective that describe effective servant leaders) and a list of people participants consider to be servant leaders On “Humility” – it comes from the word “Humus” or earth. It is thus NOT meekness or weakness, it is earthiness, “down to earth” “realistic” etc. “It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.” ~ E.E. Cummings “Man at his best – like water – serves as he goes along.“ ~ Lao Tzu

3 Journey to the East How does Hesse describe Leo the Servant as simultaneously a leader? Leo’s Law of Service: The person “who wishes to live long must serve, but he who wishes to rule does not live long.” What are the results of Leo’s disappearance? Does Leo behave according to the Hebrew concept of “Zadaka”? (giving with no expectation of anything in return; like altruism) After Leo’s disappearance, why does the group fall apart? St. Thomas Aquinas: only the humble can learn, a humble person is reflective and capable of asking “why?”

4 Characteristics of Servant Leaders
Express unlimited liability for others Know self well Hold a liberating vision Use persuasion Build community Use power ethically Unlimited liability for others is shown with careful listening and focus on others (different than doting on them, or taking responsibility for them)

5 Reverence Explore Woodruff’s statement that “service without reverence is smoldering toward rebellion” What are the connections between reverence and servant leadership?

6 Harriet Tubman What are her leadership characteristics?
In what ways does she exhibit the list of servant leader characteristics? In what ways does she fit Greenleaf’s definition of the servant leader? Someone who expects more of themselves and the world than history says they have a right to expect… Compare/contrast the leadership of Frederick Douglass (unit three) and Harriet Tubman in the abolitionist movement.

7 Florence Nightingale What are her leadership characteristics?
In what ways does she exhibit the list of servant leader characteristics? In what ways does she fit Greenleaf’s definition of the servant leader? Someone who expects more of themselves and the world than history says they have a right to expect…

8 Film Study: Hotel Rwanda
Whom or what does Paul serve at the beginning of the movie? Why do you think this changes? What characteristics, talents, or skills does Paul have that help him to be a servant leader? Suggested clips: DVD chapter 3 (0:08:00 – 0:12:25) showing Paul’s concern for only immediate family members, and DVD chapters 6 – 12 (0:22:00 – 0:57:00) which show the progressive shift or realization that he has the resources, connections, skills, and will to save many more people than his immediate family. (total time is approximately 39 minutes.) Leo, Harriet Tubman, and Gandhi, and others are humble servants of their missions – (with very different styles) – what other characteristics do they have. Does Paul display these qualities? Contrast with the prideful leader who does not serve, does not transform, does not empower, does not achieve great things (quote Creon at the end of Antigone) “I have been rash and foolish. I have killed my son and my wife. I look for comfort; my comfort lies dead. Whatever my hands have touched has come to nothing. Fate has brought all my pride to a thought of dust.” Servant Leadership is serving others, not for their wants and needs of which they are aware, but to totally transform them into something greater than they were previously. (addl film to mention: Shake Hands with the Devil, about General Dalair – Canadian in charge of U.N. peacekeeping forces in Rwanda, who chose not to break the law, ends up with a nervous breakdown)
