1 Gas Behavior Chapter 2

2 What influences the volume of a gas?
Volume = the amount of space a piece of matter takes up. Gases expand and take the volume of their container.

3 What influences the volume of a gas?
2 variables influence gas volume Temperature Measures the energy of moving particles Higher energy = Higher temperatures

4 What influences the volume of a gas?
2 variables influence gas volume Pressure Gases push outwards against the walls of their containers. This creates pressure (outward force) P = Force of gas/ Area of the container Units are Pascals (Pa) Gas always goes from high pressure to low pressure

5 What is Boyle’s Law? The relationship between volume and pressure is inversely proportional.

6 What is Boyle’s Law? MARSHMALLOW DEMONSTRATION grow shrink
-If P then V  -If P  then V 

7 What happens when you blow up a balloon?
-Pressures are Equal again. -Outside & Inside Pressure are Equal -Inside Pressure is Greater

8 What is Charles’s Law? The relationship between volume and temperature is directly proportional. *When pressure is constant and gas can’t escape or enter! -If the temperature of a gas  then V  -If the temperature of a gas  then V  -If T then V  -If T then V 

9 What is the relationship between all three variables?
In real life, T and P and V are not always constant. When one changes, so can all the others. -If T then V  then P  -If T then V  then P
