Conservation of Total Mechanical Energy:
Example: Alex is sitting in an elevator car. The combined mass of the elevator and Alex is 1000kg. While moving downwards at 10m/s the cable snaps. The car falls 400m onto a huge spring with a spring constant of 1000N/m. Assuming the car actually gets stopped by the spring what was the total compression of the spring when the car reaches zero?
