Potential Energy
Energy is the ability to do work.
Potential energy is energy that is stored. It is energy that matter has because of its position.
A skateboarder at the top of a ramp has potential energy.

3. Potential Energy  Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is energy an object has because of its motion.
A skateboarder rolling down the ramp is converting potential energy to kinetic energy.

4. Skateboard Simulation
View the simulation and click on “Bar Graph”
Discuss the change from potential to kinetic energy as the skateboarder moves from the top of the ramp to the bottom and back up.
Note: the simulation will not run on a tablet and requires and updated version of Java on the teacher’s computer.
