Welcome to Fourth Grade! Our Goals…..
Foster Independence Reinforce academic and social skills needed to progress to fifth grade. Improve Communication skills with fellow students. Encourage Responsibility within the classroom and community in school and at home. (Reinforce reading, clubs, choir, etc.) Provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. Help students to discover new interests.

ELA- New series- Journeys
Improve reading comprehension, spelling, handwriting, grammar, and writing skills. Read and comprehend award winning literature. Engage students in key concepts associated with “Daily Five” practices. Using a range of different media to convey information. (i.e. our class website, iPads, etc.) Improve Writing skills!

“Daily Five” Students will be broken up into groups within the class. The groups will vary each week based on what is going on in class as well as students strengths and weaknesses at that time. The groups will be broken into groups to work in the following areas: Meet with the Teacher- focus on reading skills and higher level thinking questions Read Independently- build independence within the classroom Read With a Partner- work on communication skills as well as build fluency and comprehension Word Work- work with the spelling and vocabulary found within the text by using a dictionary and then practicing spelling concepts Listen to the Story-(only with novels) build listening skills, comprehension, and independence

Spelling /Grammar Tests Reading Tests
*Each lesson takes about a week and a half *Reading Textbook * Spelling/Grammar=1 grade * Reading tests- Comprehension, Vocabulary, Decoding * Writing assignments= project grades Novels: -Test on the entire book, when the book is finished. -We will complete an in- class project along with each novel. If students do not finish the project in class time they will be allowed to take it home and work on it.

Social Studies Geography/ Map Skills NJ - Our Home :
Counties of NJ, Lenape Indians, Communities (Our Community),The History of NJ, and the First European Explorers, Wars, and Important People in History Functions of Maps, Map Reading, U.S. Map Current events- Once a month list of websites to use on my website due date will be discussed in class and will always be on the website under “Current Events” Every day late – 15 points Must have the article attached to the article- otherwise minus 15 pts

Homework Reading/ ELA:
Given once or twice a week depending on what we’re doing Listed on the board as well as classroom website *Grumpy Cat- class pet writing activity once throughout the year Spelling: Given options for the entire year Must complete 3 options by Thursday/Friday typically Sometimes workbook pages are given as well Social Studies: Projects and current events given a month in advance Typically have homework due every other day due to their schedule Listed on the board as well as the website

Review games and discuss what to study from workbooks Courtesy and R.E.S.P.E.C.T - Zero Tolerance for bullying - Counselor/ Mr. Jay Class Dojo 4B- Access Codes in your Folders

Anything needed in class- will be posted on our websites Up to date with what’s going on in the classrooms Talk about current events Help them gain independence Help them develop organizational skills Class Trip Help students be on time for school Absences- Please let the school office know Attend Mass on Sunday
