A typical week in year 2
3
Reading Guided Reading – once a week with class teacher
Children take part in a variety of reading activities throughout the week – paired reading, silent reading, whole class reading and shared reading with other classes. Reading at home – as regularly as possible! Minimum of 3 x a week. It really does make a different. Volunteer helpers very welcome
4
Writing Children are encouraged to write everyday.
Every Thursday the children take part in ‘the BIG write’ which is an extended writing session where they are encouraged to write independently. The writing tasks vary through a range of genre – narrative, information text, letter, character description, poetry and instructions.
5
Handwriting In year 2 children begin by writing in pre-cursive script to enable correct letter formation, size and orientation. When ready, the children will progress to cursive writing where the letters join together. Children are expected to write lowercase, capital letters and digits accurately.
6
Spellings Children bring home spellings every week. They are tested on Wednesdays. Please help your child practise at home – in the bath, in the car, walking to school or during breakfast.
7
Marking and feedback In year 2 children are encouraged to be more independent and responsible for their learning. The children are developing the skills to self-evaluate, which enables them to be reflective learners and know how they can improve for next time. In maths and literacy children are given time to read and respond to marking so they know their next steps to make progress.

Learning lenses have been fully embedded into everyday life at Loseley Fields. We believe these behaviours are skills they will need throughout their lives. Resilient Team Imaginative Brave Reflective
9
Homework Every 2 weeks the children will be given homework, giving them an opportunity to consolidate the learning in school. Children are given a choice of 9 tasks of which they choose 3 – one literacy, one maths and one other. Please make sure it is returned back to school on or before the date specified. Any questions or queries which may arise about the tasks, please do not hesitate to ask.
10
Golden rules and Golden time
In year 2 children are expected to be excellent role models and set a very good example to the rest of key stage one. All the children will be buddies this year and will have opportunities throughout the year to spend time with them e.g. reading books together, playing games. If in the unfortunate circumstance a child may not make the right choice, warnings are given before golden time is lost.
