University College Birmingham
FE/HE institution (Initial phone call went to FE!!) PGCE Early Years 33 PGCE Primary 30 School Direct AOR Confused by PGCE Early Years (EYITT / EYTS) All routes scrutinised, no matter the numbers
3
Information requirements
Documentation on trainees in the format Ofsted wanted. Didn’t like the SED data (Organised as the TDA had wanted, but Ofsted wanted it set out differently.) Drilled down into files on trainees from their application onwards.
4
With trainees in schools and at UCB
Ofsted tried to be negative wherever possible Asked trainees what was wrong with the programme / what they didn’t like / what needed to be improved Continuously trying to find fault Trainees shocked at their approach The same approach was taken with mentors in schools (Good cop / bad cop approach. One inspector was negative, but the other positive.)
5
Final feedback Minimal
Numerous positives (No one spoke about us negatively, and they were shocked by that.) Quality of feedback provided by mentors inconsistent, so some trainees don’t make rapid progress. (Insufficient numbers not making the top ‘outstanding’ grade.) Quality of mentor support for trainees inconsistent Self-evaluation needs to have a sharper focus (Very much liked mentor support for SDs!)

Improvements linked to the ITT Action Plan 2015/16
All mentors provided with a training pack file, which includes all feedback provided for trainees Mentors can gain a ‘Mentoring Certificate’ on completion of support for trainees or they can gain level 7 credits for a ‘Coaching and Mentoring’ module with the file and an academic assignment Video clip of an ‘outstanding’ mentor giving feedback to a trainee, used for training purposes Pen portrait updated with mentors using grade descriptors during weekly meetings to scaffold trainee progress Use of SMART target setting with trainees Redesign the SED so that a sharper focus on data can be developed

In preparation for Stage 2
