1 Test beam setup: status report 10/02/2009
M. Alfonsi (CERN)

2 Outline Test schedule Infrastructures Magnet
Mechanics inside the magnet Mechanics outside the magnet 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

3 Test beam schedule at SPSC
Schedule is not final. We asked to move a bit later (June-July) the first period to avoid the overlap with Crete. It is possible that some days will be lost. Expected beam type: 150GeV/c negative pions, max 107 per spill (~10s). No dump before the area  no low muon rate for working inside 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

4 Infrastructures: cables & barracks
Goliath magnet Barracks are HNA343, HNA348. Two available racks, more if required. Shorter cables (12-15m) to arrive to the zone downstream Goliath, longer (20-25m) to arrive upstream Goliath 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

5 Infrastructures: gas Fenced area below barrack Goliath magnet 4 lines 30m (stainless steel, 6/4mm outer/inner diameter). Cost ~ 800 CHF CHF for cleaning Premixed bottle or main distribution? Flammable mixture should be allowed 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

6 Goliath dipole magnet Magnet with the actual PS arrives to 1.4T
Main coil (Goliath) tested last december The whole system (Goliath+David) will be tested next March: this is an opportunity to measure also the fringe field and to check the effect on the PMTs We have the field map but the file must be decoded Height = 1.06 m R = 1.70 m Front opening = 2.40 m 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

7 Support mechanics inside Goliath
We may ask a borrow of the old NA57 mechanics, if suitable. If we have to do it ourself, some warnings arrive from NA57 experience: in particular if the coil current drops fast (e.g. failure), parassitic currents are induced in a metallic mechanics, pushing the setup out of the magnet 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

8 Support mechanics outside
We may ask if old ALICE marble table is available as well. SPS can provide us precision rails that can move on the side our setup when we have to leave the beam line to other users 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN

9 Conclusions The schedule is not yet final:
overlap with Crete must be avoided Barracks, gas area, cable/pipes routing are defined. Participation in magnet test in March We can count on SPS help for mechanics, maybe we may borrow some mechanics from old H4 users 20/01/2009 M. Alfonsi - CERN
