1
Triple-GEM setup at the GIF++
M. Abbas, M. Bianco, M. Gruchała, F. Fallavollita, J.A. Merlin, A. Sharma on behalf of the CMS-GEM group
2
Installation of new setup for triple-GEM aging test @ the GIF++ facility
Preamble Goal of the tests Requirements: Space / location Time in the bunker Services Setup layout and possible interferences Installation in the bunker
3
Preample Triple Gem detectors already exposed in the GIF++ facility from April 2014 to beginning 2016. Aging test to validate the triple-GEM technology for the GE1/1 project. ~ 60 mC/cm2 collected in about 12 months of continuous tests Tests performed by J.A. Merlin with a dedicated setup located in the D1 position D1 Position for new triple-GEM setup already approved in Nov 16
4
Goal of the new tests Validate the triple-GEM technology for the ME0 detectors 240 mC/cm2 expected to be collected in the ME0 triple-GEM chambers in 10 years HL-LHC
5
Triple-GEM setup requirement
Space: New setup has been designed and is in preparation to host the triple-GEM chambers Setup smaller and “more light” w.r.t. what has been used in 2014/2016 test Footprint reduced to about 52x52 cm from about 57x70 cm ( to fit in the actual available space) Access to the setup at least from one side, preferable from the right side, to perform weekly or biweekly test Position in the bunker D1, as in 2014/2016 test
6
Triple-GEM setup requirement
Time: Goal is to integrate at least 240 mC/cm2, ME0 expected integrated charge (no safety factor) From the past experience about 3 years are needed to reach this value, assuming standard GIF++ duty cycle If safety factor 2 will become mandatory extension of the exposure time will be necessary No use of the beam is foreseen during these aging tests
7
Triple-GEM setup requirement
Services: All the services needed to run the triple-GEM setup, at least for the first period are in place, (gas/HV/LowVoltage/Electronic Crate), services developed and installed for the old setup will be re-used
8
Setup and possible interferences
To avoid (or limiting) interferences with setups actually present in the GIF++ small and light setup has been designed Foot print ~ 52x52 cm Electronics located in lower part ( No source shielding effect, the electronics will be located outside the cone of the source) Fully integrated and moveable setup to easily remove it from the bunker when needed
9
Setup and possible interferences
~67 cm ~50 cm Closest setup actually located at 50 cm from the fence located around the source Closest chamber at ~67 cm from the fence, not necessary to move the chamber, enough to re-adjust the feet of the setup Maybe easier to move back the setup of about 2-3 cm
10
Setup and possible interferences
Space available behind the first actual first setup 19 cm Lead shielding actually present on the floor
11
Setup and possible interferences
Access to the setup is needed at least from one side, for weekly measurements, preferable from the right side (looking to the source) Possible access Best Side Possible access
12
Installation in the bunker
Due to the foreseen source maintenance, expected in the end of March, we avoid to move inside the bunker the setup during the first weeks of March Best time windows the first available day after the source maintenance and re-commissioning of the system; 31th March? Contact person for this setup will be: M. Gruchała (CERN phone number ) and F. Fallavollita (CERN phone number ) both CERN doctoral students
