Clipping Membrane - Motivation
Occlusion and context 3D structures Clipping - Indiscriminately cuts through structures Clipping used by Illustrators - Selectively chose where to cut In medical imaging, 2D slice rendering is one of the most common tools for examening 3D data Slice the data in an arbitrary direction and display it as a 2D image with little or no context. 3D rendering shows more the global context, yet the details are lost by clutter from un interesting structures How about having a slice with 3D rendering added to the image of structures close to the plane? Clipping Membrane - Methodology
Elastic membrane wrapping around structures Physics based approach Need a way to define the local context So we think how can we define this with no adittional semantic information (segmentation) Use physics Translate into physics problem We have a data set, for instance a scalar field type CT for each data element We take the data properties, in our case the scalar values and map it inot a an attractive or repulsive force (force kernel). To give the user a controlling mechanism we utilize the transfer function concept Combined force kernels create a potential field
