1 11-6 Rational Expressions with Like Denominators
Algebra Glencoe McGraw-Hill Linda Stamper

2 As with fractions, to add or subtract rational expressions with like, or the same denominators, combine their numerators and write the result over the common denominator. Then simplify, if necessary. / 1 / When you are subtracting rational expressions with like denominators, place the subtracted quantity in parentheses. Then distribute the negative.

3 You must place the subtracted quantity in parentheses!
Simplify. Example 1 Example 2 1 You must place the subtracted quantity in parentheses! Factor out a –1 to make the y positive.

4 Be careful with inverse denominators.
Rewrite in good form (variable first). Factor out a -1. Remove negative one from denominator by changing the term sign to the opposite. Subtract. Negative monomial in numerator so bring negative sign out front.

5 Simplify. Example 3 Example 4

6 Simplify. Example 5 Example 6 Example 7 Example 8
