1 ILIAS WP3 activities report and ET organization
Harald Lück

2 From 2004 to 2008 WG3 activities changed from technical issues and planning of 1.5 and 2nd generation detectors… … to ideas and plans for a 3rd generation observatory Main effort in the last year: ET Design study preparations

3 WG3: A European Strategy for Future Antennas
Transparency from 2005 (R. Flaminio) Objectives and Delivearbles - Determine objectives attainable trough short-term improvements Draft a plan for an European network of GW detectors at the 2010 horizon - Short term plan after 18 months Long term plan: ‘White book’ defining the GW community objectives over 10 years period YEAR 1 YEAR 2 YEAR3 YEAR 4 YEAR 5 Tasks and Deliverables Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 WP 3: A European strategy for future antennas Tasks: Working group and WEB site set-up Elaboration of short term improvement plan Presentation of short term plan to institutions Elaboration of ‘White book’ Presentation of ‘White book’ to institutions Writing of final report Deliverables: Annual Report WG chaired by H. Lueck (MPI Hannover) and M.Punturo (INFN Perugia) Palma de Mallorca, October 24th, 2005

4 ‚white book‘ -> ASPERA roadmap (Sept. 2007)
Permanent and postdocs Construction and analysis No distinction between engineers and physicists Only the agents belonging to ASPERA or affiliated to it. running experiments’ operation personnel included PHDs excluded! This causes a non negligible error in estimating the financial impact. Investment (R&D+ Construction + Commissioning +Operation costs) No labour included, unless it is externalised labour (eg hire people to excavate a large cavity, prepare a large series of detectors etc) Mostly money demanded from the agencies affiliated to ASPERA or EU LISA not included E.T. construction largely external costs

6 GraWiToN proposal Initial Training Network under the Marie Curie actions Training of young scientists on GW theory and experiments Submitted in Sept08 It involves: France, Italy, Germany, UK, Poland and Spain 3M€ overall “typical” budget, 300k€ could be for EGO Past the threshold but negligible chances of funding STAC Nov2008

7 First call for proposals closing in spring 2007
Transparency from early 2007 For design studies, preparatory phase, and support actions design studies: 35 M€ Support actions: 28 M€ (budget ) Indicative budget for preparatory phase: 34 projects (budget ) Closure: 2nd May 2007 First contracts to come into force before end 2007

8 ET: Einstein Telescope
A European 3rd Generation Gravitational Wave Observatory Conceptual design study started May 2008 Money available from Sept on (3M€ in total)

9 Need for new infrastructure
Existing facilities subject to high, unshieldable environmental noise levels (seismic, gravity gradient noise) Data taking with advanced detectors incompatible with installation of third generation techniques in same envelope (requires long comissioning times)

18 Scientific Coordinator
WP5: Management Administrative Coordination (Jacques Colas) The Project coordinator chairs the Governing Council and the Executive board. He is responsible for the correct funds distribution within the contractors of the consortium. Scientific Coordination (Michele Punturo, Harald Lück) Verify and promote the achievement of the scientific targets of the project. His duties are: Trace the planning of the overall activities in accordance with the progresses and milestones reached in the different working packages Facilitate information exchange between WPs Chair the technical sessions during the project general meetings Collect and merge single WPs contribution to the bi-annual and annual reports Project Coordinator Scientific Coordinator WP1 coordinator Task responsible WP2 coordinator Task reponsible WP3 coordinator WP4 coordinator Secretary Secretary Virginie Bornes) Support Project coordinator and Scientific coordinator. Responsible for official web site containing Documentation of WP progress Documentation of meeting activity.

22 WP5: Management Science team
Participation open to all scientists of the GW community willing to contribute to this project through their expertise and networking ability. Co-chaired (first 6 months) by GEO spokesperson and by Virgo-EGO Scientific Forum coordinator The Science Team is to keep continuous contact between the scientists working in the project with the larger GW scientific community and to allocate resources (man power and know-how) available outside the project for all the activities in the project that need external support
