Roman Government To calm the angry plebeians, the patricians created offices that only plebeians could hold. A tripartite government was created. Each part had its own responsibilities.

Magistrates 2 consuls Head of the government Served for one year
Chose the senators Commanded the army Acted as judges Both consuls had to agree patricians

Senate 300 members Served for life Advised the consuls
Advised the assembly Controlled the finances Approved and disapproved laws by the Senators Made decisions about foreign governments patricians

Assemblies & Tribunes Elected the consuls
Elected government officials (judges) Voted on laws Declared war Plebeians

Civic Duty An action or responsibility expected of every member of a society Examples include: Attend assembly meetings Voting in elections Hold public office (wealthy)

Checks & Balances Romans put restrictions on their leader’s power
Gave government officials the ability to restrict the powers of other officials Laws proposed by the Senate had to be approved by the magistrates and approved by the assemblies Checks and balances keep any one part of a government from becoming stronger or more influential than others
