What is a BOM?
5
What is a BOM? Bills of Materials (BOMs)
A bill of materials or product structure (sometimes bill of material, BOM or associated list) is a list of the raw materials, sub-assemblies, intermediate assemblies, sub-components, parts and the quantities of each needed to manufacture an end product. Wikipedia A formula or recipe of the components needed to build your finished product or a sub-assembly of that finished product. Kelly #CollaborateCanada

What is a BOM? Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Commonly used in Manufacturing Associated with Discrete manufacturing, however can be used for formulas and recipes for process manufacturing in Dynamics AX. Formulas (Available in later versions of AX 2012) allow for batch processing. Earlier versions have to use BOM functionality. #CollaborateCanada
7
In Released Products Product information management > Common > Released products In a Released product with a BOM, navigate to the Engineering tab Lines will open up the BOM for that Released product #CollaborateCanada
8
In Inventory Management
Inventory management > Common > Bills of materials ALL BOMs shown here #CollaborateCanada
9
Formulas Product information management > Common > Released products Still under the Engineering tab on a Released product Different location and Batch orders become available instead of Production orders! #CollaborateCanada

BOM Line Types
12
BOM Line Types Item Any inventory can be used Phantom
Represents a placeholder for a subassembly Pegged supply Make-to-order – doesn’t use on-hand inventory Vendor Creates a marked purchase order – used for services #CollaborateCanada
13
Where do I set the BOM Line Type?
#CollaborateCanada
14
Flushing Principles
15
Flushing Principles Set on Released Product or at BOM level
Used to indicate when to automatically include the selected line on a picking list Start – when the production is started, include the line on a proposed picking list Finish – when the report as finished step is processed, include the line on a proposed picking list Manual – don’t include at either of the steps #CollaborateCanada
16
Protect Your BOMs
17
How can I stop others from editing BOMs?
Inventory Management > Setup > Inventory and warehouse management parameters Block removal of approval Block editing #CollaborateCanada
18
Active Versions and Effective Dates
19
Active Versions and Effective Dates
BOMs can only have one active BOM per combination BOMs must be Approved first! #CollaborateCanada
20
Active Versions and Effective Dates
Effective dates drive validity period for a BOM Can be managed at the BOM line level to phase out components! #CollaborateCanada

Where Used Functionality
24
Where Used Inventory Management > Reports > Bills of materials > Where-used In the BOM lines, there is a Where used button that will pull up an inquiry form On the Released product, Engineer tab #CollaborateCanada
25
Where Used #CollaborateCanada
26
Mass Update and Copy
27
Change BOM Item Inventory Management > Periodic
Bills of materials or Formulas allow for Change of item. Be careful! This can really get messed up. Try in a TEST environment first! #CollaborateCanada
28
Copy BOM In the BOM Lines Functions > Copy #CollaborateCanada
29
Copy BOM Will open a new form Can copy BOM BOM, BOM Production,
Production BOM Can choose method Replace or Add #CollaborateCanada
