6 New National Curriculum for PE
From Sept 2014 the NCPE aims to ensure that all pupils: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities are physically active for sustained periods of time engage in competitive sports and activities lead healthy, active lives

7 Ofsted Report Feb 2013 - Strengths
Two thirds of Primary Schools are rated good or better and three quarters of Secondary Schools GCSE PE Results have risen PE makes a significant contribution to pupils’ personal well-being, development and enjoyment of school There is still some evidence of the positive impact of School Sport Partnerships

8 Ofsted Report Feb 2013 - Weaknesses
Subject Knowledge and confidence remains an issue in Primary PE delivery as does planning and assessment One fifth of pupils cannot swim by the time they leave Primary School More able pupils not being challenged enough The ‘Physical’ aspect is under-developed: PE needs to do more to tackle sedentary lifestyles

11 New focus on Primary Schools
The Government are spending over £450 million on improving PE and sport in primary schools over the 3 academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016. Funding will be allocated directly to primary headteachers.

13 How are PE & School Sport Delivered?

14 National Curriculum PE
A non-statutory subject in Wales Sport Wales work with key partners to try and ensure that schools provide: 2 hours of high quality PE to every young person each week A broad range of opportunities to enable young people to take part in 3 hours of school and/or community Sport

15 Out with the old….PESS v PLPS
The PE and school Sport Programme was set up in 2000 to raise standards Aims: Every young person is challenged and supported in P.E and school sport Provision is engaging to all young people Develops the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to be hooked on sport for life. In 2014 this was replaced with PLPS (Physical Literacy Programme for Schools)

16 PLPS – Report to Welsh Government
An independent report to the Welsh Government recommended PE to be upgraded to a core subject & for a National Physical Literacy Framework to be developed to support PE teaching in Schools

17 Outcome of Report £1.78 Million for Physical Literacy Programme in Schools. Aim = to deliver a long term improvement in physical literacy and an increase in physical activity amongst children in schools in Wales, helping them get hooked on sport for life and to adopt healthy lifestyles.

18 Current Curriculum Review
The Donaldson Report (2015) Independent review of curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales Proposes six Areas of Learning and Experience: Expressive arts Health and well-being Humanities Languages, literacy and communication Mathematics and numeracy Science and technology.
