Phonics Workshop Aims To develop confidence in helping your child with phonics and reading To teach the basics of phonics and useful ways you can help your child at home To show examples of activities and resources we use to teach phonics

What is phonics and how can I help my child at home?

Developing knowledge of the alphabet + Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer!

Phonics is split into 6 phases
Phase 1 – Getting Ready for Phonics Tuning into sounds in the environment Listening and remembering sounds Talking about sounds i.e. in music, rhymes and songs

Phase 2 Learning sounds to read and write simple words
Children will learn the first 19 sounds: Set 1: s a t p Set 2: i n m d Set 3: g o c k Set 4: ck e u r Set 5: h b l f ff ll ss They will use these sounds to read and spell simple CVC “Consonant-Vowel-Consonant” words Sat tap dig duck rug hill hiss

Phase 2 Learning sounds to read and write simple words
The children will begin to read simple captions and sentences A dog can yap A cat in a hat Rats in a bed

Phase 3 onwards Learning new sounds (phonemes) to read and write words
Children will learn ‘digraphs and trigraphs’ – when 2 or 3 letters make one sound Sh ch th ng ai ee igh oa oo ar ow or er ur ear air ure and many more! They will use these to read and spell words.

They will use these to read and spell words and sentences. The sheep went to the park Can a shark say quack? Mark and Carl got wet in the rain. It has been hot this year.
