Aims
To develop confidence in helping your child with phonics and reading
To teach the basics of phonics and useful ways you can help your child at home
To show examples of activities and resources we use to teach phonics

5. Phonics is split into 6 phases
Phase 1 – Getting Ready for Phonics
Tuning into sounds in the environment
Listening and remembering sounds
Talking about sounds i.e. in music, rhymes and songs

6. Phase 2 Learning sounds to read and write simple words
Children will learn the first 19 sounds:
Set 1: s a t p Set 2: i n m d
Set 3: g o c k Set 4: ck e u r
Set 5: h b l f ff ll ss
They will use these sounds to read and spell simple CVC “Consonant-Vowel-Consonant” words

7. Phase 2 Learning sounds to read and write simple words
The children will begin to read simple captions and sentences

8. Phase 3 onwards Learning new sounds (phonemes) to read and write words
Children will learn ‘digraphs and trigraphs’ – when 2 or 3 letters make one sound
