Introduction to Biology, Botany and Zoology
Biology 1 – Introduction Introduction to Biology, Botany and Zoology
2
Biology is the study of all living organisms.
Biologists study what those organisms really are, where they came from, how they grow, where they live, how they change over time – how they evolve.
3
Biology studies every living thing on Earth and every object of the Universe!
plants agriculture anatomy bacteria animals viruses funguses
4
All living things need 4 things to survive:
air food water reproduce
5
Botany – is the study of plants.
6
All plants need food, water and air to grow!
7
Plants get their food through a process called photosynthesis: they combine water, air and sunlight to grow.
8
Plants also need to reproduce to make new plants.
9
We plant seeds in the soil, water them and watch the new plants grow!
10
All plants have common names and scientific names.
Blue Spruce is Picea pungens. Sunflower is Helianthus annuus.
11
Try saying Sunflower’s scientific name: “Helianthus annuus”
Try saying Sunflower’s scientific name: “Helianthus annuus”. Is it easier or harder then a common name?
12
Zoology – is the study of animals.
13
All animals need food, water and air to live.
14
And all animals need to reproduce to make sure their kind doesn’t die out!
15
Animals have common and scientific names too
Animals have common and scientific names too. There are many-many-many animals in the world! Scientific names help scientists from all over the world speaking all kinds of languages know what animal they are talking about!
16
These are some scientific names. Let’s try to say them!
Little Black Ant is… Dog is Canis familiarus. Monomorium minimum African Penguin is Spheniscus demersus.
17
Scientists use a two-name system called a Binomial Naming System
Scientists use a two-name system called a Binomial Naming System. Scientists name animals and plants using the system that describes the genus and species of the organism. The first word is the genus and the second is the species.
18
Do you know that you have a scientific name too?
What’s your name? Do you know that you have a scientific name too? Homo is your “genus” and sapiens is your “species”. Yep, you are Homo sapiens - that translates from Latin as "knowing man“!
19
What’s “genus” and “species”? That’s how the animals are classified.
20
That’s called “Taxonomy”: classifying all living beings based on similarities between different organisms. A biologist named Carolus Linnaeus started this naming system. He also chose to use Latin words.
21
The end.
