Goal: Simplify expressions with like terms
1-4 Combining Like Terms Goal: Simplify expressions with like terms
2
Vocabulary Terms – the parts of the expression
Like Terms – terms that have the same variable raised to the same exponent Coefficient – the number that is multiplied by a variable Constant – number without a variable
3
Vocabulary Combining Like Terms – adding or subtracting the coefficients of terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. Simplified – all like terms have been combined and there are no parentheses
4
Examples 2x + 3x 5x 12y – 8y 15g + (-12g) 4y -72h – (-12h)
2.3z + (-1.6z) 5x 4y 3g -60h 0.7z
5
3x + 8y + 2x – 3y 3x + 8y + 2x + (-3y) 5x 5y 5x + 5y
Combining Like Terms 3x + 8y + 2x – 3y 3x + 8y + 2x + (-3y) 5x 5y 5x + 5y
