Norm What society has determined to be proper behaviour.
Ex: You shake someone’s hand when you meet them.

Moral principle Statements that help us determine what we should or should not do to achieve what is right. Ex: “Do onto others as you would have them do unto you” – The Golden Rule

Moral rule Rules that give us specific ways to act according to our principles. Ex: “Software piracy is prohibited” is the application of the principle “don’t steal from others”.

value Attitudes, character traits and behaviours that help us lead a good life. Ex: Family, friends, work ethics, health, etc.

Ethical issue An issue that arises due to a conflict with our values and norms. Ex: “Abortion”

Ethical Question Questions that help us discuss issues from different perspectives. Ex: “Should you have an abortion if you are too young to take care of the baby?”

reference Someone or something that we refer to in order to have information when thinking about an ethical issue. Ex: Past experiences

Practices, places and items that relate to a religion. Ex: The Bible, the Torah, a Buddhist Temple
