Understanding your child’s report at KS3
KEY CHANGES In 2014 the government announced that all school must remove levels as part of the reforms to the National Curriculum All subjects have developed their own KS3 specifications that consider the skills needed for success at GCSE. These are now being taught from Year 7 and will continue to support learning though KS3 and 4 This change means that students should have a more personalised curriculum, focusing on the skills they need to improve to succeed and to reach their potential.

Understanding your child’s report at KS3
TARGET SETTING Your child has been set aspirational and stretching targets based on their entry point from KS2 These targets will ensure your child is working towards the best possible grades at GCSE. The targets now relate to specific skills needed for success at GCSE rather than National Curriculum levels Targets will change once a student masters a skill. These will be shared with students through books and verbal feedback.

Understanding your child’s report
THE REPORT Students have been assessed on specific skills through a series of formative assessments. They have been graded for each skill, and their progress has been indicated by the colour coding on the report The report accounts for assessed pieces only and not classwork The colour coding is an indication of how far away they are from their end of year target Green indicates that your child is on or exceeding their targets expected by the end of the year for the specific skill. Red does not mean underachievement. It is an indication that these are the skills that students need to focus further to make further progress toward their target The report also indicates the next step in your child’s learning. These targets have been taken from the KS3 specifications that subjects have developed. We are continually developing and adapting the wording of these targets but it should give an indication of the next steps in their learning.

Example of how to interpret the report.
Green indicates that your child has performed really well in this skill. Red indicates that your child needs to improve this skill to increase their chances at GCSE. The statements are the next steps that your child needs to master in order to make further progress in their learning. The report shows that a child is performing in line or above their expected ability in RE. They need to improve their skills for religious practices Please be assured If there is a major concern about your child’s progress the class teacher or HOY would be in contact with you to discuss this.

FUTURE REPORTS We are currently reviewing the report that went home at Christmas following student and parental feedback. We aimed to give you as much information about your child’s progress and what their next steps to improve are for each subject. However, we realise that this may have caused confusion and are looking to simplify the reports in the future. In the meantime, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child's progress at parents’ evening. However, if you are concerned about any of the information in your child's report please contact school.
