RULES: IF clause and a RESULT clause Describe true situations that occur under real or possible situations Start with the IF clause or the RESULT clause Use a comma when starting with IF clause For questions: in the result clause only. RULES: Tells when one action happened in relationship to another action. Start with the ADVERB clause or the MAIN clause Use a comma when starting with ADVERB clause Words for time clauses: after, before, until, as soon as, while, when. ADVERB CLAUSE (TIME) MAIN CLAUSE When there is a possibility the National Weather of a hurricane, Service issues a hurricane watch. AS SOON AS you hear make sure you take the warning, action. RULES: Use CAN’T or COULDN’T to show that something is almost impossible. Use COULD, MAY (NOT), and MIGHT (NOT) to show that something is possible but NOT certain. Use MUST or MUST NOT to show that something is almost certainly true or not. Only use COULD for questions. EXAMPLES: There weren’t any nuts in the cake, so that CAN’T (COULDN’T) be the problem. A 911 call COULD (MAY, MIGHT) safe the life of someone you love. My husband took a first-aid class, so he MUST know what to do. COULD it be an allergic reaction?
