Landslide This… By definition, a landslide is: the general term for a slowly to very rapidly descending rock or debris.

Landslides=Dangerous
Maps were created to warn about the dangerous areas. Here is one that shows the California counties that are prone to landsliding.

Devastating Destruction
Homes, businesses, and entire cities can be wiped out by landslides. Southern California experienced landslides after the 1994 earthquakes.

Types of Slides Not all landslides are rapid or noticeable.
Liquefaction is a type caused by earthquakes, in which soil turns to liquid. Via de las Olas Palisades experienced slow sliding (see pic.)

Damage to Homes Thousands of homes effected each year.
Sometimes homeowners are unaware of sliding. Damage is extremely expensive. Can be fatal.

Water+Landslides=BAD!
Sometimes land slides into water. When this occurs: It can block the flow of water Fish, animals, and plants may die Water becomes polluted

Highways and Landslides
Humans cut through land to make highways Steep grading of hills and undercutting of rocks cause landslides You have all seen <WATCH FOR FALLING ROCKS> signs that warn of landsliding Landslides can ruin roads or cause major traffic jams
