3 VOCABULARY An exponent tells how many times a number called the base is used as a factor. The base is the number used as a factor. Numbers expressed using exponents are called powers. Numbers like 100 are perfect squares because they are the squares of whole numbers. A number is in exponential form when it is written with a base and an exponent. Exponent 73 Base = 7  7  7= 343
