Geography Investigation
Otzi the Ice Man Geography Investigation
2
Dear Ice Man Investigator:
Thank you for accepting the challenge that we have set you. There are three key questions that still puzzle us in 2015. We think that Otzi was buried underneath a mass of ice, but can you find any evidence that a glacier existed in the area? How did Otzi stay so well preserved for over 5000 years? Objects and bodies underneath the ice on mountains generally move downhill over time. We don't think that Otzi moved very far from the place where he died. Why is this?

As Geographers and explorers, it is always important to know where things are
Objective: To find out who, where and when our Ice Man was found. Ötzi the Ice Man was found in the European Alps and the location is marked by a red place mark on the Google Map below. Your job is to build up a 'Police Incident Report' using the map, and pages 2-5 from the Ice Man Book. Task 1: Police Incident Report

Who do you think these people are?

Task 2- Discovering the Ice Man- Diary Extract
To help you with your diary extract and to understand the terrain that the two hikers took, you need to study page 2-5 of the Ice Man book and study the route that the two people took on that day back in September See if you can match up the description in the book with locations on this map

Task 2A- Calculate approximately how much colder it would have been at 3210 metres altitude.
Remember this formula: For every 150 metres you go up in height, you lose 1°C in temperature. Erika & Helmut Simon parked their car at 1800 metres altitude before setting off. The thermometer in their car measured 15° C as they set off.

Task 3- Article with questions
As glaciers melt, bodies resurface Posted by Nick Smith on Aug 26, 2014 1. What impact can crevasses have on locating artifacts from things like plane crashes? 2. What clues do melting glaciers leave behind for historians studying wars?

Task 4- Cartoon- Complete a three sequence cartoon strip with commentary that shows how Otzi was buried. Use 'An Icy Grave' on pages of the Ice Man textbook. You perhaps know that parts of the world went through an Ice Age that lasted up until about 10,000 years ago. The ice was retreating by the time that Otzi died, but we can say that temperatures were certainly colder then than they are today. Check out this map showing the ice coverage during the ice age. Construct a cartoon that describes what the last few days were like for Otzi CARTOON PICTURE GOES IN HERE Text goes in the box below

Task 5- Written Report You must now present your findings to the Otzi Research Trust. The Trust have commissioned you to find the answers to the following questions: Question 1. We think that Otzi was buried underneath a mass of ice, but can you find any evidence that a glacier existed in the area? What do glaciers leave behind them? Can you find any evidence on any of the maps or the Google Satellite view links on this page? Sketches or annotated photos to explain the connection to glaciers is vital to answer this question. Question 2. How did Otzi stay so well preserved for over 5000 years? If bodies are buried in the ground, only a skeleton is left after one year in normal conditions. Why was Otzi's body so well preserved? What is the link between altitude, temperature & ice? Question 3. Objects and bodies underneath the ice on mountains generally move downhill over time. We don't think that Otzi moved very far from the place where he died. Why is this? This is the most difficult question to answer and will test your knowledge and understanding. Think about the videos you previewed and pages 4-5 in the Otzi book
