1 Geographical Distribution of STEMI Incidence in Limerick City
Napohn Chongprasertpon, Dr JJ Coughlan, Prof Thomas J Kiernan UHL Health Research Symposium 2017 INTRODUCTION Information on geographical distribution of STEMI would be useful for emergency medical services (EMS) and for prevention from a public health perspective. We conducted a retrospective observational analysis to determine whether a geographical pattern existed in the incidence of STEMI treated by PPCI in the Cardiology Department at UHL. METHODS This study included all patients admitted to UHL with STEMI subsequently treated with PPCI from 2012 to Data was obtained from the Cardiology STEMI database in UHL. Geographical incidence of STEMI was organised into map form using area information from the patients’ addresses and the map created using Adobe Photoshop Version 8. RESULTS Study Population: Over the 5-year study period, there were 876 STEMIs treated by PPCI. Mean age was 65±13 (SD) years. Male patients tended to be younger (63 vs. 69 years, p<0.001). Geographical Distribution: The geographical distribution of STEMI patients presenting to UHL was wide with 154 patients from the Limerick city area, 700 patients from the rest Ireland excluding the Limerick city area, 16 from Europe excluding Ireland, and 6 from the rest of the World outside of Europe. DISCUSSIONS The geographical distribution for Limerick City is more likely to reflect the location where the STEMI occurred than the distribution for patients from further geographical areas. CONCLUSIONS There was a range of STEMI incidence for different areas in Limerick City. This has ramifications for EMS staff Acknowledgments: Thank you to Prof Kiernan and Dr Coughlan for their expert supervision and guidance on this project. Thank you to the cardiology nurses in maintaining the STEMI database and to cardiology research nurse Ms Ciara Cahill for helping to organise the project. Project was supported by MELG Midwest. Geographical display of STEMI patients from Limerick City. Numbers represent incidence of STEMI (total in figure=154).
