1 A recipe for cooking a turkey states to allow 20 minutes for each pound of turkey and to add 5 minutes per pound if the turkey is stuffed. Our turkey weighs 16 pounds and will be stuffed. To have dinner at two o'clock in the afternoon, what time does the turkey need to go in the oven? Allow 1/2 hour for cooling and carving. Explain your answer and your thinking.

2 Math Happenings What topics, events, or thoughts would you like to share this week that are related to math? Examples: Thoughts related to last class The things kids do Math in the news Questions that someone in the group might be able to help with? Other?

3 Agenda - Class 11 Math Happenings Accessible Mathematics - discussion
Fraction Activities Clock Fractions Benchmark Fractions Fraction Tracks The Doorbell Rang – (time permitting) Pattern Block Fractions – (time permitting)

4 Accessible Mathematics Class 11
Instructional Shift 1 Incorporate ongoing cumulative review into every day’s lesson. Instructional Shift 2 Adapt what we know works in our reading programs and apply it to mathematics instruction. Instructional Shift 3 Use multiple representations of mathematical entities. Instructional Shift 4 Create language-rich classroom routines. Instructional Shift 5 Take every available opportunity to support the development of number sense.

5 Accessible Mathematics Class 11
Instructional Shift 6 Build from graphs, charts, and tables. Instructional Shift 7 Tie the math to such questions as How Big? How much? How far? to increase the natural use of measurement throughout the curriculum.

6 What should we see in an effective mathematics classroom? (Shift 7)
Lots of questions are included that ask: How big? How far? How much? How many? Measurement is an ongoing part of daily instruction and the entry point for a much larger chunk of the curriculum. Students are frequently asked to find and estimate measures, to use measuring, and to describe the relative size of measures that arise during instruction. The teacher offers frequent reminders that much measurement is referential--that is, we use a referent (such as your height or a sheet of paper) to estimate measures.

7 Brainstorm . . . Which concepts in the curriculum lend themselves naturally to the integration of measurement into the lesson? How can we integrate concepts of measurement into lessons whose focus does not provide a natural connection to measurement?

8 Models for Fractions Region or area models
Length or measurement models Set models 1

9 Comparing and Ordering Fractions
1/15, 1/20, 10/11, 8/9, 5/8, 5/7, 3/5, 4/9, 6/12, 13/11, 3/4 Work alone for a couple of minutes to put these fractions in order from least to greatest. Do not use a common denominator or convert to a decimal.

11 Video Activity Looking for Classroom Evidence of the Process Goals AND the Inquiry Cycle Each person at your table needs to take one of the process standards as their focus for the video. Be sure at least one person is covering each standard. As you watch the video, check each of the “look-fors” seen and make notes of what you observed to share with your group. 3. How do these pieces align with the inquiry cycle? Prior to beginning this activity, the teacher read “ The Doorbell Rang” to their students. The grandmother made cookies and every time more friends arrived, they had to determine how many cookies each child would get. In this scenario, students are trying to divide 12 cookies among 8 children.

12 Homework Article Accessible Mathematics – chapter 9
Reflection for #1 and #2 Reflection due on BNVCTM Continue to work on lesson plan.
