4 Annotating the Text Analyze the writing task. Number the paragraphs.
Before you begin to annotate, you should know why you are reading the text. What are you being asked to do with it? This will help guide you in your annotations. Number the paragraphs. Circle key words. Look for words that are repeated, defined by the author, used to represent an idea or seem relevant to the author’s purpose. Underline the main ideas and other information relevant to the writing task.
