4. What we do
Responsible for drafting, negotiating and concluding contracts for externally funded and other education, research and consultancy projects undertaken by UWE.
This includes collaboration agreements, sub-contracts, main contracts, consultancy agreements, secondments, material transfer agreements……..and many more
The Contracts Team also provide advice on a wide variety of contractual queries (e.g. confidentiality agreements, intellectual property) and on issues that have legal implications (e.g. photo permissions).
We liaise with Finance, Personnel, Academic Registry and other departments as necessary.

5. The position now
The Contracts Team are processing 1,000+ contract enquiries annually
New processes have been implemented - categorising by contract complexity/risk type into two flows, providing time benefits;
Flow A) Non-UWE intellectual property ownership and higher risk contracts include higher level review within RBI
most of these can then flow into B) after this review
Flow B) the majority flow down a simpler contracts route
saving Team time as we do not need to queue contracts in the simpler contract B) route, within agreed limits and monitoring.
The Contracts Team have developed and now use a computerised contracting system which includes ‘standard’ templates;
As part of this development there is a computerised Faculty Contracting sub system that has been prepared for use by individual facultys/schools when faculty Deans wish to introduce this. Currently, this is being used by BNE to draft a number of contracts

6. Specific Issues in UWE – How you can help us
Acceptance letters, s, communications…… please pass these to the Contracts Team if your bid is successful – the Contracts Team are generally trying to arrange acceptance of the offer from the potential funder and so we need to see the paperwork

Please remember, a Tender commits UWE at the proposal stage – please get advice from RBI before entering into a Tender
A PA1 and the proposal need to give specific contractual information where possible

RBI keeps originals of all signed contracts in a fireproof safe and we provide an electronic copy to the Project Manager, Faculty Dean and Finance – please send over the original documents to the Contracts Team: contact Brian Allen or Jane Foley
Except for Confidentiality agreements, contracts with UWE require signature by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, or his nominee – we can arrange that for you.
