1 Change me, I’m Ready Department of Education National Capital Region
INTERIM DIVISION OF THE CITY OF SAN JUAN PEDRO CRUZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Change me, I’m Ready PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE VERA MARIE ELLAR PASCUAL JULIE PLANCO GABALES

2 LEARNING TASK 1. Show that physical change takes place in materials
2. Observe that the product of chemical change cannot be brought back to its original form 3. Observe that no new material is formed physical change takes place 4. Show how chemical change takes place in materials ( e.g. cooking, rusting, burning, rotting and ripening of fruits) 5. Observe that a new material is formed when chemical change takes place.

3 EASY??? Hmm Let’s try to find out.
GUIDE CARD What I think about the things to do? O Easy O Average O Difficult For this lesson, I want to study it... O Alone O With a partner O Within the group After reading this page O I still do not understand O Now I understand what the lesson is all about. EASY??? Hmm Let’s try to find out.

4 PHYSICAL CHANGE Physical Change is a change in state or form only. The original characteristic remain. No new substance is formed. It occurs when there is an increase and decrease in temperature. Evaporation, condensation, freezing, melting and sublimation are Physical change. Physical change can be reversed. NOTE: * change in size * change in shape * change in state or form

5

6 What will happen if i do these...Is there a new substance formed ?

7 CHEMICAL CHANGE In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed. Chemical change is a change in the composition of matter. The original characteristics of matter are lost and new substances are formed . It happens naturally as in photosynthesis, in burning and ripening of fruits. It is used for industrial purposes as in the making of cheese, vinegar, synthetic clothes, detergents and other modern products. Note: * New substances are formed * The original characteristic of matter are lost

8 Hmm...What’s next. What about fruits do they undergo also changes???

9 DID YOU KNOW? One of the main changes that occur on the earth’s surface is weathering. Both physical changes and chemical changes occur in weathering. Soil is an important product of weathering. Physical changes in the rocks results in physical weathering. In cold countries, freezing of water in the cracks within the rocks causes in physical weathering. The water usually freezes, it expands in the cracks and may push hard enough to split the rock

10 There are several differences between a physical and chemical change in matter or substances.
A physical change in a substance doesn't change what the substance is. In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed. Physical changes can be reversed, chemical changes cannot be reversed with the substance changed back without extraordinary means, if at all. For example, a cup of water can be frozen when cooled and then can be returned to a liquid form when heated. If one decided to mix sugar into water to make sugar water, this would be a physical change as the water could be left out to evaporate and the sugar crystals would remain. However, if one made a recipe for a cake with flour, water, sugar and other ingredients and baked them together, it would take extraordinary means to separate the various ingredients out to their original form. When heat is given off in a chemical change or reaction, it is called an exothermic reaction. When heat is absorbed in a chemical change or reaction, it is called an endothermic reaction. The speed at which chemical reactions take place depend on the temperature pressure and how concentrated the substances involved in the chemical reaction are. Sometimes substances called catalysts are used to speed up or help along a chemical reaction. Light is helpful in the processing of film.

14 Are you ready to play “Name That Change?” How To Play
For each item, you will need to tell whether a physical or a chemical change has taken place!

23 ACTIVTY CARD 2 Problem: What is chemical change?
Materials: crumpled paper, sugar, can, alcohol lamp Procedure: 1. Burned a crumpled paper in a can. What change took place? What is the new substance? 2. Put a teaspoonful of sugar in a can and put the can over fire. What change took place? What is the new substance? Write your observation in the table below. Activity What change took Place? New substance Burned paper Sugar placed over flame

24 Condition that cause change
Activity card 3 Name of material Changes in size Changes in shape Changes in state Condition that cause change Rubber band Barbeque stick Cardboard Peanuts Wire Ice cubes

25 ACTIVITY 4 Problem: Can we bring back new substance to its original form? Procedure: Look at the rusted nail. Compare it with a new on? What change took place ? Can we bring back the dough to its original form? What is this change? 2. Mix the flour with water, baking powder and sugar. What’s the new substance? What change took place? Can we bring back dough to its original ingredients? 3. What can you say about chemical change?
