Main Problem The main problem of the story is that Timothy is sick with pneumonia and can’t move but they have to move soon or they will get crushed and killed but if they leave, Timothy will die. Mrs. Frisby is working with other animals on the farm and in the forest to help her son live while finding out many more shocking things about her husband that died the past year, how other animals live, and many more things. She is doing all she can to make sure that she doesn’t lose her son.

Chapter One Chapter One is called The Sickness of Timothy Frisby. It introduces Mrs. Frisby and her family and talks about Timothy getting sick. Before Mrs. Frisby notices that Timothy is sick she goes outside in search of a different type of food for her family. She finds a hallowed-out tree stump filled with her family’s favorite food, corn. She takes some of the corn and puts it in her bag. When she gets home she finds three of her children in the kitchen, waiting for breakfast and the fourth in the bedroom sick. Mrs. Frisby then decides to go to Mr. Ages.

Chapter Two Chapter Two is called Mr. Ages. I predicted that Timothy would die and they would all morn but that was defiantly NOT what happened. Mrs. Frisby was scared that Dragon, the farmers cat, would get her or that other predators would come to tear her from her family forever when she went to see Mr. Ages. But if she didn’t go to see him Timothy would just get worse. When she finally got to Mr. Ages house, she had to wait outside until he came back from gathering herbs, (erbs.) When he came back she told him Timothy’s symptoms and he told her that he had pneumonia, (knee-moan-ya.) After that, Mr. Ages gave her 3 packets to give to Timothy.

Chapter Three Chapter Three is called The Crow and the Cat. I predicted that Mrs. Frisby will be attacked on the way home and was partly right. On her way home she decided to cut through the farmyard. She saw a young crow tangled in some colorful string and went to help him get out when Dragon, the farmer’s cat, came along and saw them. When he was about to pounce Mrs. Frisby had just finished untangling the crow and told him to fly while she ran but he made her get on his back so she could have a better chance of living too. Then the crow, whose name turned out to be Jeremy, took her home and promised to help her whenever she needed it, just to ask for him.

Chapter Four Chapter Four is called Mr. Fitzgibbon's Plow. I thought that Timothy would get better but the family would get attacked, or possibly killed by the plow but that was NOT what happened. When Mrs. Frisby gave Timothy the medicine he said that it didn’t taste bitter but wasn’t exactly pleasant either. He said that he would prefer it over other types of medicine. Mrs. Frisby is now very worried about moving day, one, because the plow will be coming to turn over the garden soon and two because Mr. Ages said that Timothy shouldn’t go outside or be exposed to the cold but it is still cold outside and the ground is still frost covered. The shrew that lives next door said that he won’t be starting the plow for awhile but at the end of the chapter Mrs. Frisby hears the plow starting to rumble.

9 Click on the house to return to the selection menu.
Chapter Five Chapter Five is called Five Days. I thought that Mrs. Frisby and her family will rush out of the garden and Timothy will make it but that didn’t happen. When Mrs. Frisby went to see if Mr. Fitzgibbon was really starting the plow, she was relieved that he was going to wait 5 days. It wasn’t much but it was still important. When she crawled out of the hole in the fence that she was watching from she saw Dragon laying on the ground and froze, thinking that he would kill her but he just sat there. It was almost like he was sleeping but he wasn’t. When she crawled to the ground, still cautious, she saw rats going into their rosebush, hauling a string of cable.

Chapter Six Chapter Six is called A Favor from Jeremy. I thought that they would find a solution for Timothy and investigate the rats but that didn’t happen. Mrs. Frisby ran into Jeremy again and he reminded her that he would help her when she needed it. At first she said no thank you but realized that he may be able to help her. She told him about Timothy and Jeremy told her about an owl that all the birds go to for advise. Mrs. Frisby agreed and Jeremy said that he would pick her up at 5:00 PM that night. Even though she agreed she was worried that the owl would eat her because he hunts creatures like her.

Chapter Seven Chapter Seven is called The Owl. I thought that the owl would try to eat her but that actually is not true. When Jeremy came to pick Mrs. Frisby up her son, Martin kept on asking Jeremy questions until his mother told him that she had to get going. On the ride there Mrs. Frisby loved the way that the river looked like a snake from up above but was terrified from being off the ground at the same time. When they finally got to the old oak tree, Mrs. Frisby was scared to cross the limb. When Jeremy told her it was safe, she still hesitated but crossed when she saw two glowing yellow eyes open. Jeremy told the owl how the mouse had saved his life and the owl told her that he would accept her until his hunt. Mrs. Frisby went inside after she finally got the nerve to and the owl told her all that she had already inferred.

Chapter Eight Chapter Eight is called “Go to the Rats.” I thought that he would tell her to do something that could lead to the end of her, or her family’s, lives but he really didn’t. Right when Mrs. Frisby was beginning to feel as if she had wasted her time and was about to leave the owl stopped her to ask her name. When the owl heard that her husband was Mr. Jonathan Frisby he told her more things including that she should go visit the rats that lived in the rosebush and ask them to move her house to the lee of the stone. Mrs. Frisby thanked him again as she rode back home thinking about reasons why the owl would want her to go to the rats. She had a lot of thinking to do because she had to decide whether or not she was going to go to the rats.

Chapter Nine Chapter Nine is called In the Rosebush. I thought that she would walk towards the rosebush and some rats came out but I was only half way right. When Mrs. Frisby got home she saw Timothy and immediately decided to go to the rosebush but without telling any of her children. When she went to the rosebush she couldn’t find an entrance so she thought about where she saw the rats enter yesterday. When she finally found the entrance she kept following the path until she reached a clearing with a huge rat that Mrs. Frisby thought was Justin, according to the owl’s instructions, but turned out to be a uncooperative rat named Brutus.

14 Click on the house to return to the selection menu.
Chapter Ten Chapter Ten is called Brutus. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would persuade Brutus to let her in and that was ONE of the things that happen. When Mrs. Frisby first saw Brutus she was a bit scared because of his size, compared to her at least. After consulting with the huge rat and made no progress she started to head back down the tunnel when she ran into Mr. Ages with a broken foot. As she sat down with him to rest they talked and she told him why she was there. Mr. Ages told her that he could get her inside and they walked back to the entrance and Mrs. Frisby met Justin, the usual guard who was only not guarding for a big meeting.

Chapter Eleven Chapter Eleven is called In the Library. I thought that the rats would help her and would sort of consider it correct, in a way. Mr. Ages told Justin who Mrs. Frisby was and he led them into the den. It was very dark and Mrs. Frisby was only going the right way because of the narrow walls. When the group got to a small clearing with electric lights and carpet. It led to another room that turned out to hold supplies and other things like that. It also had a elevator and some stairs that led even further into the ground. Because of Mr. Ages leg they took the elevator that scared Mrs. Frisby. When they stepped out of the elevator they were in another clearing that many hallways and a large, meeting room fed into to. This is where she met Nicodemus, another rat the owl told her to talk to. When she told him her problem, he said that he would help her after the meeting and showed her into the library. When the rats and Mr. Ages left Mrs. Frisby she looked around instead of reading, it confused her, and found a large black board that, in big, bold letters, was titled The Plan of the Rats of NIMH.

16 Click on the house to return to the selection menu.
Chapter Twelve Chapter Twelve is called Isabella. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would learn about the plan and . Mrs. Frisby looked at the board and its schedule very confused when a young, female rat came into the library holding a pencil and some sheets of paper. At first the rat freaked out, thinking that Mrs. Frisby was a spy but soon dismissed the idea when she started to answer questions. Mrs. Frisby got a slight outline of what NIMH was and learned the young rats name is Isabella and that she wants to marry Justin even though he calls her Izzy. When Mrs. Frisby ask what the Plan was she got a inside answer that Isabella thought made perfect sense. The young rat started to talk about Jenner and how she doesn’t like him when in came Mr. Ages, Justin, Nicodemus and a rat she had never set eyes on before.

Chapter Thirteen Chapter Thirteen is called A Powder for Dragon. I thought that the rats would start to help her and was partly right. Mrs. Frisby soon learned that the other rat’s name was Arthur and as Isabella left the library the group of rodents sat down at one of the reading tables. Mrs. Frisby repeated what the owl had said again and they drew a map as she showed where her house was. The rats said that they could do it that night but didn’t have anyone to put the powder in Dragon’s bowl. When Mrs. Frisby ask what he meant they told her how they kept Dragon from chasing them and none of the rats could fit in the hole leading to the bowl. Mrs. Frisby said that she would do it if it saved her son’s life and there was nothing that anyone could do to stop her. After a small argument, they agreed that Mrs. Frisby could do it. The rats and Mr. Ages then told her that she was risking her life by doing the task because it was putting the powder in the bowl that broke Mr. Ages leg and it was putting the powder in the bowl that killed her husband.

Chapter Fourteen Chapter Fourteen is called The Marketplace. I thought that they would try to cheer up Mrs. Frisby and was right but it wasn’t the main part of the chapter. Once, Mrs. Frisby had dried her tears enough to dry she told them she was mainly sad because he never told her and they told her that he was trying to tell you but he was sworn to secrecy and had to get permission. Once Mrs. Frisby had calmed down Nicodemus took her to his office to tell her how they came to live on the farm. Mrs. Frisby sat down in his office as Nicodemus began his story. He said that he lived in a gutter at a marketplace where food was left every day that his brother, best friend and him went out together to eat. One day his brother got sick and his mother told him he had to stay home so Nicodemus and his friend, Jenner, went out. Along the way many other rats joined them and they found a large pile of food. Not thinking it was unusual the rats ran towards it only to be captured and placed in cages then dumped in the bed of a truck, only to be put back in the cages.

Chapter Fifteen Chapter Fifteen is called In the Cage. I thought that Nicodemus was going to finish his story but he didn’t. Now I will continue what Nicodemus was saying…. At first he thought that someone had called animal control, even though all the rats did was eat the leftover food, but then he heard the men talk about a laboratory. Once they got to the lab they were moved to different cages where they couldn’t see each other. Then they were split into 3 groups, tagged and given shots. Those shots were given every day and changed the group Nicodemus was in lives forever.

Chapter Sixteen Chapter Sixteen is called The Maze. I thought that he would talk about escaping and I was partly right. Now I will continue with Nicodemus’s story…. After a few weeks, he was taken out of his cage and out into a hallway leading into a yard with no fences, or so he thought. Nicodemus ran towards the yard and jumped back as he got electrically shocked. He was about to try again when he saw a tunnel. He went into the tunnel and found another way to go into the yard. The same thing happened again, and again, and again ect., each time getting closer to escaping. The last time he was abut to get out when a hand picked him up and Nicodemus realized that he was being watched the whole time. This happened every day for a while. One day, he heard a voice through the board blocking his cage from the one next to him. A young rat named Justin was going to escape and was asking if he wanted to join him. Nicodemus was about to answer when a hand picked him up and he was tested again. When it was Justin’s turn he ran out of the cage before he could be picked up and into a air vent. The scientist locked the doors and stood there watching Justin thinking he was about to give up when he wasn’t.

Chapter Seventeen Chapter Seventeen is called A Lesson in Reading. I thought that Justin would escape but he didn’t. Now I will continue with Nicodemus’s story…. Before Justin could move Julie, the nicest scientist, picked him up and put him back in his cage. About a year after being captured, the rats were shown a screen with a picture on it and symbols underneath it. The symbols were each sounded out as the rats were taught to read. One day Nicodemus was passed a message from Jenner, “Read the sign by the door.” He did as he was told and has now memorized what it said: RATS MAY NOT BE REMOVEDFROM THE LABORATORY WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION. At the bottom in small, hard to make out letter was the word NIMH. Another day in reading lessons they were shown a picture of a tree but instead of trying to read the word tree, Nicodemus read a sign in the background on a building that looked like the one he was in. It read: NIMH. PRIVATE PARKING BY PERMIT ONLY. RESERVED FOR DOCTORS AND STAFF. NO VISITER PARKING. No rat knows what it means, even now. One day Justin said that he was going to explore. He had read the instructions on the cage and knew how to open it. He also figured out how to come back in. That night when everyone was gone he opened the cage and Nicodemus ask if he should come but Justin said that if he came too and they got stuck they would be suspicious, but if he just came, they would think that he had just gotten out again. If they both got found, new locks may be put on the cages. Even with this news, Nicodemus knew that this could be the first step to escaping.

Chapter Eighteen Chapter Eighteen is called The Air Ducts. The next night Nicodemus and Justin told the other rats about the air ducts and they found thread and a screwdriver so they could unscrew the metal plates and also find their way back to their cages. One day Justin found the way out and that night every rat was told. They planned to escape the next night and were about to go to sleep when they heard a squeaky mouse voice saying, “Nicodemus? Nicodemus? I’m Jonathon. Nicodemus?” It turns out that the mice had heard about their plans of escaping and wanted to know if they could join them. The rats agreed to let them out but after they were out they were on their own. The next night they made their way through the vents when a breeze blew 6 of the mice away, never to be seen again. The rats looked for them but couldn’t find them. When trying to find a way to open the duct out, a mouse told him an idea. The rats tried it and the two mice could fit through and let the rats out. They were free!

Chapter Nineteen Chapter Nineteen is called The Boniface Estate. I thought that they would find the farm but they didn’t. Now I will continue with Nicodemus’s story…. Because the mice helped the rats so much they said that they could stay with them as long as they would like to and the mice quickly agreed to stay with their new friends. With their new talent of reading, the group knew which places had food that they could take and which didn’t. After about 4 months the group found a place to stay for the winter. Once the rodents knew that the house was empty that went inside by breaking a cracked window. They found food, mostly cans, and TONS of it. They could read what was in the cans but couldn’t get to the food inside. Then, a rat found a can opener and read the instructions. When they found a process to keep all the open food hidden from the gardener, the group explored the house. The thing they found most amazing was in the study. There were thousands of books! The rodents spent most of their time reading and practicing their writing. They also found a newspaper that talked about a newly wedded couple going on their honeymoon around the world, due to come back in May. It also showed a picture of the newly named Mr. and Mrs. Boniface leaving the same house they were staying.

Chapter Twenty Chapter Twenty is called The Main Hall. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would go home and was correct, in a way. After Nicodemus finished his sentence the door opened and they were told it was noon and that lunch was ready. Mrs. Frisby hurried home, told her children that the house would be moved that night and came back. On the way to Nicodemus’s office Justin asked if she wanted to see the main hall and learn what the Plan was. She agreed and followed him into the room with the elevator. Instead of going down the elevator or the stairs they went into another room, almost the size of half a house, where there were tons of working rats. They went around the corner with empty sacks and came back with full sacks. After looking at the plows Mrs. Frisby followed Justin around the corner. There was piles of food, each individually separated, and seeds. Then Justin told her that this was the Plan. When he saw that she was confused he told her that the Plan was to not steal to live but to live with their own food and supplies. Mrs. Frisby understood and was happy that she now The Plan.

Chapter Twenty One Chapter Twenty One is called the Toy Tinker. I thought that Nicodemus would get to finish his story but he didn’t, gosh its long! Back in Nicodemus’s office, with Justin, Mr. Ages and Nicodemus, Mrs. Frisby continued his story with some help…. They left the house about 8 months after they moved in looking for a permanent home. From the books they read they decided to look for a cave near a farm or town to live in. After a little while they found a animal preserve that had farm land and caves. While on the preserve they found a man lying dead in the forest. He wasn’t supposed to be their and neither was his truck. After burring him the rats figured out that he was a Toy Tinker. He lived and worked in his truck and died trying to get it out of a ditch. One of the rats asked who owned the truck now and the rats finally came up with the conclusion that they could take it.

Chapter Twenty Two Chapter Twenty Two is called Thorn Valley. I thought that they would tell what they did with the truck and they did, but there was more. The rats decided to go back and live near a farm they had found before. They used the cave for The Plan and built tunnels and a secret entrance in the rosebush. Nicodemus had ideas of how to avoid stealing but needed to see what was on the other side of the mountain to pull through with it. After talking to some of the animals he was told to go see the owl. He went and was told how to go there and what was on the other side of the mountain. Later Nicodemus took Jenner out and they went over the mountain. As Nicodemus had wanted they had found a natural clearing that was perfect for planting crops. Jenner didn’t like the idea but a lot of other rats did and they came up with The Plan. They are planning to plant their first batch of crops soon and have saved a 2 year supply in case it doesn’t work out. They are planning to move and be away from the Fitzgibbon farm forever.

Chapter Twenty Three Chapter Twenty Three is called Captured. I thought that They would tell how Jenner left and they did but it was just a minor part in the chapter. When Nicodemus looked at the clock he saw that they barely had time until Mrs. Frisby needed to put the powder in Dragon’s bowl. They decided that they had time for one last question and the answer to it was… Jenner left with some followers because he didn’t like the idea of not stealing. After that Mr. Ages, Justin and Nicodemus told her what to do and what would happen, then they were off. Justin went with Mrs. Frisby until she crawled up into the kitchen and he waited in the hole. Mrs. Frisby followed her directions and didn’t really think when she saw a stool making the bowl further. Once she had her chance she dashed to the bowl, poured the powder in but when she turned back she found darkness and heard a voice. The voice belonged to Mr. Fitzgibbon’s youngest son and he was very excited that he caught her.

Chapter Twenty Four Chapter Twenty Four is called Seven Dead Rats. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would escape but she didn’t. After about 3 transitions, Mrs. Frisby ended up in a old birdcage hanging from the kitchen ceiling. She decided to try to get out once the family had gone to bed. While they were eating dinner, Mrs. Frisby listened to their conversation. She heard Mr. Fitzgibbon say that at the local hardware store the owner found 7 rats messing around with a motor. They were also chewing on a electric cable that ended up killing them. After a few days, the government got involved. Mr. Fitzgibbon joked around saying that he had tons of rats at his farm and the government said they would come in 2 days to get rid of them. The 2 boys told their parents that the rats lived under the rosebush and the family agreed to taking them out of the ground as long as Mrs. Fitzgibbon got new ones. Now Mrs. Frisby had 2 reasons to get out as soon as possible, her children and to warn the rats. At least Dragon was asleep on the floor. Around ten, all the lights were off, the doors were locked and the family was asleep. It was time to make her move.

29 Click on the house to return to the selection menu.
Chapter Twenty Five Chapter Twenty Five is called Escape. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would escape and that was about half of what happened in the chapter. Once the family went to bed and Dragon was locked outside, Mrs. Frisby climbed the side of her cage and tried to open the top. After about 30 minutes of struggling she concluded that she wasn’t strong enough. Then she found Justin who had come to save her. He opened the cage so it looked like it had just broken on its own and met her back outside. Then she told him about what would happen in 2 days and he told her that he knew that she would bring good luck. When she was confused he told her that if she hadn’t overheard the farmer it would have been worse. When they got back to Mrs. Frisby’s house they found the shrew getting angry at the rats. Once she was calmed down they continued with the move. They got Timothy bundled up and watched in awe as the rats moved their home. Once the house was in place Mrs. Frisby put her children in bed as the rats finished up.

Chapter Twenty Six Chapter Twenty Six is called At the Meeting. I thought that Mrs. Frisby would help the rats and that sort of happened. Mrs. Frisby slept good and worry free but when she woke up she thought of the rats. She was thinking about going to them but she couldn’t think of a way how she could help. Soon she heard a voice calling her and found Brutus asking if she could come to a meeting. After telling her children Mrs. Frisby was soon in the rosebush telling, word for word, all she could. The rats had soon figured out a plan…. They would put garbage in the storage room, knock down and cave in the main entrance, make a back entrance that was easier to find, so the men could block that instead of the real back entrance, leave 10 rats so it didn’t seem empty, Justin was the first to volunteer to Isabella's disappointment. When the rats left inside heard the men’s footsteps they would start to go through the back entrance, when the men sprayed, as expected, they would leave as loudly as possible and dash through the bushes, making themselves seen, to the rest of the rats waiting in their new home. When Mrs. Frisby got home her children sensed that she was sad and she told them that the rats were leaving. She thought about the day she would tell them the story but it was not that day.

Chapter Twenty Seven Chapter Twenty Seven is called The Doctor. I thought that the rats plan would work and it did for most of the rats. When the day came that the exterminators came Mrs. Frisby climbed a tree on the edge of the forest where she could see what was going on. Mr. Fitzgibbon got the plow ready and was working in the barn when the truck came. After the men investigated the rosebush and the surrounding area the rosebush was plowed. They found 2 holes under the rosebush which Mrs. Frisby realized was their fake back door. One of the 3 exterminators put on a mask and started to spray the hole. After a tense segment of time, Mrs. Frisby saw 7 rats escape. A little later a 8th rat came out and collapse on the ground. The 7 rats were fooling the men by running in and out of the forest in 2’s and 3’s. When the men thought that a whole pack was there the got nets and charged. When they got a little too close, the rats ran and the men couldn’t find them. The men started to dig and after about 30 minutes they found the supply room filled with garbage and 2 dead rats. Mrs. Frisby didn’t get to see who they were though. Once the men left she ran down the tree towards the 8th rat. It was Brutus and Mr. Ages was trying to put medicine in his mouth. With her help it was quickly done and Brutus told them that he couldn’t see and he tripped over a rat, swallowing some of the gas. Another rat helped him out of the tunnel then went back in for the one remaining rat. Mrs. Frisby told him that they both died as they marveled over the rat that helped Brutus’s bravery.

Summary Mrs. Frisby, a mouse with 4 children, finds her youngest son sick with pneumonia. She went to Mr. Aged, another mouse, who gave her medicine. The family has to move out in 5 days but her son can’t move. On the way back she found a crow stuck in some string. She helped him out just in time for Dragon, the farmer’s cat, was about to pounce. The crow, Jeremy, told her that he could help her with her problem so he took her to an owl, who, once he learned who her widow was, told her to go to the rats. The next day she went to the rats and was told their story. They promised to help her with her problem and she learned more about her husband and how he died. Later she was putting a special powder in Dragon’s bowl to make him sleepy when one of the farmer’s sons caught her and put her in a birdcage. When she was there she heard that some men were going to come to get rid of the rats. When the family was asleep, Justin, one of the rats, came and got her out. They went to her home and watched them move it in awe. She retold her story the next day and the rats came up with a plan. It worked except for one rat got stuck so another went in to get him…. Both died but the family don’t know who they were. When her son was strong enough, the family moved to their summer home where the kids learned the story and Martin, her other son, said that one day he would go to the rats new home and find out who the rat was. For the details you just have to read this fantastic book to find out….

He is not mentioned a lot but if I had to choose some traits to describe him they would be…. Brave Family Loving Determined Adventurous Show Off Those are the traits that I got from his small part in the story. The story would barely be changed if he wasn’t in it and the changes would be very minor. Gerald the day they got caught

Solution There were two big problems in this story but first I will tell you the solution to the main problem, Timothy is sick and can’t move but they need to move on moving day. After Mrs. Frisby is sent to the rats and she tells them her problem, they agree to move her house to the lee of the stone. After getting captured and making Dragon groggy, Mrs. Frisby and her family watch the rats in awe as they move her house next to the stone where they can stay as long as necessary. The next problem was found in solving the main problem, exterminators are coming to kill the rats. The way the rats, with Mrs. Frisby and Mr. Ages help, solved this was having a group of 10 rats stay in the storage room with garbage. They would put a more seeable back door so they wouldn’t block the real one. The 10 rats would make as much noise as possible and when the gas came they would run out and make themselves appear as a whole pack of rats. This plan was almost a total success! Only 2 of the rats didn’t make it and it would have been one if the other hadn’t gone back for him. Who they were, only the rats know but Martin WILL find out one day….

Epilogue A few days after the exterminators left the plow came but the closest it came to the cinder block was about 2 feet. A few days after that Mrs. Frisby and her family moved to their summer home. When they got there the children played with their friends and Mrs. Frisby talked to the other mothers who were worried when her family was late. Mrs. Frisby decided to tell her kids about NIMH because one day they may be affected by it so the day after they had arrived she told them. The children were sad at the end of the story, thinking the rat that went to save the other was Justin. Martin said that one day he would find out who it was by going to thorn valley. He would ask Jeremy to take him there and ask them. All he had to do to find Jeremy was to put something shiny out when they moved back to the cinder block. Mrs. Frisby said that she would think about it and that night she slept the best she had in a long time.
