HIC v LIC (See handout) In simple terms
HIC urbanised slowly in Victorian times ( ). They moved when factory jobs became available in the industrial revolution. People moved to many urban areas. Movement was steady and fairly well managed. LIC urbanised rapidly from 1950 onwards. They moved for work as MNC relocated to their countries for cheap labour, and the rural areas began to decline. Movement was mainly to one main PRIMATE city and was unplanned and unmanaged.
9
MDC - Manchester Manchester was a relatively small town until the onset of the Industrial revolution. The Cotton Industry and mechanisation of factory work meant that huge numbers of workers were needed. These came from the surrounding rural areas. (Between ). After this time, Manchester became a centre of industry and steadily grew until 1920 when growth slowed and population became more stable. 1800 – Population 95,000 1850 – 400,000 1900 – 450,000 2000 – 440,000
10
LDC – Lagos (Nigeria) Until 1950, Lagos was a small City in Nigeria. From 1955 onwards, rapid growth occurred. At this time the oil industry boomed as did investment from foreign companies. As jobs grew in the city, the countryside was ravaged by flood, drought and civil unrest. His forced people to flee to the city of Lagos where they remained. Birth rate is high so population grew both from migration, and natural increase. Growth is about 8% per year 1960 – 600,000 1990 – 5.6 million 2010 – 10.5 million 2015 – 12.4 million??? 2050 – 37.2 million????????
11
Natural Increase Death rates fall due to…. Better sanitation
Access to water Better access to medical care More money so better food = Population growth
12
Megacities A Megacity is a city with over 10 million people.
Due to migration and natural increase, many cities in poorer parts of the world are now passing this 10 million threshold
