How could you improve this paragraph?
Power is presented in the play when Mrs Birling and the Inspector meet for the first time. This is shown when Mrs Birling says: “That, I consider, is a trifle impertinent, Inspector.” By calling the Inspector ‘impertinent’, Mrs Birling is talking to the Inspector as if he is a child and is making clear she does not appreciate her family being asked questions by someone she feels is of an inferior standing. Mrs Birling tries to use her power as someone of a higher class to embarrass the Inspector into leaving them alone. The audience thinks she is a snobby and nasty person. This shows that it was common for the police to have less power than the aristocracy at the time, which Priestley was against.

Priestley presents the theme of power in the play using the first meeting between the Inspector and Mrs Birling and the delicate balance between class and law. Mrs Birling is offended that her family is questioned by a police officer and labels the Inspector ‘a trifle impertinent.’ The use of the adjective ‘trifle’, which is slightly informal, with ‘impertinent’, implies that Mrs Birling is being somewhat sarcastic in her address of the Inspector and is attempting to berate him as if he were a cheeky child. Priestley has done this to show Mrs Birling intends to use her power as a member of the aristocracy to embarrass the Inspector and make it clear to him that he has no place interviewing a family as apparently so respectable as the Birlings. This makes the audience feel intense dislike towards Mrs Birling, as her feeling of power comes from her social status and she has an apparent disregard for the police, the upholders of the law. This presentation of Mrs Birling symbolises everything that Priestley hated about the aristocracy and the power they had over the whole of society. He despised the way the power of the upper classes made them feel they were above the law and able to look down on the people trying to enforce it. As such, he has presented the Birlings in such a way that make them almost a gruesome caricature of everything that was wrong with the Capitalist society in which they lived.
