1 IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ!!! Think About It…
Why do cells in our body divide? Try to come up with 3 reasons. Take a moment to discuss with your neighbor. For growth! Otherwise, how would babies grow up to be adults? For repair of damaged tissues and replacement of dead cells! Otherwise, we would never heal from injuries and we would wither away because our body’s cells are constantly dying. For reproduction! Otherwise, how would there ever be more humans?

2 Notes – Mitosis and Meiosis – Two Types of Cell Division in Our Bodies

3 There are 3 types of cell division among organisms.
Binary fission is used by simple one-celled organisms, like bacteria. More complex organisms use two types of cell division for two different purposes. The two types of cell division in our bodies are known as mitosis and meiosis.(my OH sis)

4 Mitosis Mitosis is used when a cell needs to be replicated into exact copies of itself. Everything in the cell is duplicated. The two new cells have the same DNA, functions, and genetic code. The original cell is called the mother cell and the two new cells are called daughter cells. Examples of cells that are produced through mitosis include cells in the human body for the skin, blood, and muscles. Mother cell Daughter cells

5 IMPORTANT…PLEASE READ
IMPORTANT…PLEASE READ!! In real life, our cells have 46 chromosomes- 23 pair. Therefore, after mitosis, new cells must have 46 chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in our cells distinguishes us from other organisms. It makes us human. Fruit flies have 8 chromosomes (in their cells) and potatoes have 48.

6 Meiosis Meiosis is used when it is time for the entire organism to reproduce. There are two main differences between mitosis and meiosis. First, the meiosis process has two divisions. When meiosis is complete, a single cell produces four new cells instead of just two. The second difference is that the four new cells only have half the DNA of the original cell, instead of having identical DNA to the mother cell. This is important for life on Earth as it allows for new genetic combinations to occur which produces variety among organisms…different traits that make every organism unique. Cells that undergo meiosis are the cells used in sexual reproduction called gametes (egg and sperm).

8 Let’s watch a Brainpop about mitosis.
Brainpop-Mitosis

9 Recap… Mitosis is how all cells in our body, EXCEPT for our reproductive cells (egg and sperm), divide and make more of themselves. Meiosis is how our sex cells (reproductive cells) divide and make more of themselves.

10 Complete a Venn diagram to compare and contrast these two types of cell division in the human body.
