Subtext Sometimes characters say exactly what they mean:
“Hand me that pencil.” “What color is the wall?” “I don’t like you.” “What time does the train arrive?” “I’m going to go to the grocery store.”

Subtext Many times, however, character don’t say what they really mean OR what they are saying has additional meaning behind it. “I really like your sweater.” could mean… What an UGLY sweater Your sweater is pretty, but her’s isn’t I like your sweater, but he doesn’t depending on what word you hit and how you say it

Example - from PROOF Hal: You wrote this? Catherine: Yes
Claire: You mean Dad dictated it to you? Catherine: No, it’s my proof. It’s mine, I wrote it. Claire: When Catherine: I started after I quit school. I finished a few months before Dad died. Claire: Did he see it? Catherine: No. He didn’t know I was working on it. It wouldn’t have mattered to him anyway he was too sick. Hal: I don’t understand - you did this by yourself? Claire: It’s in Dad’s notebook. Catherine: I used one of his blank books. There were a bunch of them upstairs.
