2 Week 9 units and measures
Functional MATHS Week 9 units and measures

3 Geometry What did we do last week? Recognise and use 2D and 3D shapes
Names of 2D & 3D shapes Nets of 3D shapes Solve problems involving 2D compound shapes Understand Tessellation

4 What are we going to do today?
Units and measures Estimate, measure and compare length, capacity and weight Convert between metric units Solve problems requiring calculation with temperature, time and money

5 Height Length Weight Capacity Estimating measures

6 Can you guess………….

7 Tall Mount Snowdon is? 1085 metres

8 Long is an average pygmy shrew?
5cm (3cm without tail)

9 Tall is the world’s tallest building?
Burj Khalifa (directed study) 828m 830m

10 Heavy is a polar bear? Male: 450kg Female: 150kg – 250kg

11 Heavy is a bumblebee? 0.04g – 0.6g

12 Much water can an elephant’s trunk hold?
4 – 10 litres

13 Heavy is an ostrich egg? 1.4kg

14 64cm (2’ 1”) Tall is the world’s smallest living woman?
Jyoti Kisanji Amge (directed study) 64cm (2’ 1”)

15 251cm (8’ 3”) Tall is the world’s tallest man? Sultan Kösen
(directed study) 251cm (8’ 3”)

16 Converting between metric measures
Length Weight Capacity

17 Metric System We mainly use the metric system
This system uses units such as: metre, centimetre, kilometre, gram, kilogram, litre, millilitre and the Celsius scale for temperature. It’s all based on 10, 100 and 1000!

18 Imperial System What do we still use?

19 Why do I need to know this?
During the exam you will need to calculate things such as Area, Perimeter or Volume They will normally give you the measurements but mixed up, for example: Length is 150cm and width is 1m, what is the area? Before you can work out the area you need to make sure they are both in the same format

20 Metric Units Convert 12m into centimetres.
Convert 2670g into kilograms

21 Metric Conversions - LENGTH
Functional Skills Mathematics - Measurements Metric Conversions - LENGTH Examples: Convert 3m to cm 3 x 100 = 300cm Convert 5.7km to m 5.7 x 1000 = 5700m Convert 3.6km to cm 3.6 x 1000 = 3600m 3600 x 100 = cm

22 Metric Conversions – WEIGHT/MASS
Examples: Convert 5g to mg 5 x 1000 = 5000mg Convert 2.9kg to g 2.9 x 1000 = 2900m Convert 7.6 tonnes to mg 7.6 x 1000 = 7600Kg 7600 x 1000 = g x 1000 = mg x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 g mg Tonne kg ÷ 1000 ÷ 1000 ÷ 1000
