colony- a place that belongs to another country
Countries wanted colonies for power, natural resources to get rich, and to spread their religion. (3 G’s- glory, gold, God) England, France, Spain, Holland, Sweden, and Portugal all had colonies in North America Charter- document given someone permission to start a colony

Mercantilism an economic theory that says a colony exists for the good of the mother country.

1. The colony provides raw material to the mother country.

2. The mother country uses the raw goods to make manufactured goods.

Early Colonies

Roanoke, VA 1585- England’s first colony started by Sir Walter Raleigh
Indians cut off food supply when they learned colonists wanted their land 1586- Colonists returned to England. 1587- John White and Raleigh try to start the colony again. 1590- After returning from England, White finds that Roanoke “disappeared”.

Sagadahoc, MA (now ME) 1607 Plymouth Company started it in Maine. (many were convicts) Weather problems 1608 colonists returned to England.

French in the New World 1. Huguenots (French Protestants) started the first French settlement in Florida. 2.After being driven out by the Spanish, the French settled Canada starting in The French explored the Mississippi River and name the area Louisiana.

The Dutch- New York/ New Jersey
First settled by the Dutch called New Netherlands in 1624 Used a patroon system- one person brought several families and became the leader of the colonial area Gave freedom of religion Peter Stuyvesant was the governor Bought Manhattan from Native Americans and named it New Amsterdam (NYC today)

New Sweden/ Delaware 1. First settlement was Fort Christina in 1638.
Johan Printz was the governor Peter Stuyvesant (governor of New Netherlands) conquered New Sweden
