5. Who was involved? Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Augustinian Monk and a university lecturer at Wittenberg
Composed his “95 Theses,” which detailed the flaws of the Catholic Church.
Lutheranism – a brank of the Protestant Christian church that identifies with the theology of Martin Luther.

6. Who was involved? John Calvin (1509-1564) French Protestant Theologian
Writer/Journalist
Calvinism – a branch of Protestantism that follows the theological tradition and forms of Christian practice of John Calvin.

7. Martin Luther
“95 Theses” – protested the Pope’s sale of indulgences as well as other issues with the Catholic Church.
Written in 1517 and nailed to the door of Wittenberg Castle Church

9. Martin Luther Diet of Worms (Vorms) – No, they did not eat worms!
After the Pope found out about Luther and his rebellion, he summoned the Diet of Worms.
This was a meeting or assembly (diet) held at Worms.
Luther was brought forward to respond to charges of heresy before the political authorities.

10. Martin Luther
Luther also began translating the Bible from Latin, which only the Catholic Priests could read, to German, so everyone could read.
Why would this be significant?

11. John Calvin
Lived in Geneva, until anti-Protestant authorities in forced him to leave. He was invited back in 1541, and became an important spiritual and political leader.
Used Protestant principles to establish a religious government. In 1555 he was given absolute supremacy as leader in Geneva.

12. The Counter-Reformation
The Catholic Church was slow to respond to Luther and other reformers.
The Council of Trent, which met on and off between 1545 and 1563, articulated the Church’s answer to the problems that triggered the Reformation.
