Mountains in the North Taurus and Zagros Mountain Chains Why do they benefit Mesopotamia? Provide extra fresh water for the Tigris and Euphrates Snow melts during Spring and floods the rivers, bringing fertile soil. Low elevation in the South Climate of a desert with little rainfall, however, the soil is very rich. Water flows down hill, this is area is the “low spot” of the area.
