13
What is MLA documentation style?
A documentation style is a standard format that writers follow to tell readers what sources they used and how to find them. The one used for language arts is from the Modern Language Association (MLA), which is a professional organization of several thousand English professors. MLA style requires you to document your sources in two connected, but equally important ways.
14
MLA Parenthetical: The first way to document the sources you used are with in-text documentation. Within the body of the paper, use parenthetical documentation to cite which source you used. Works Cited: The second way is at the end of the paper. Provide a list of the sources you used in your paper. Title this list “Works Cited” Now that you know what the two ways are, its time to go over the guidelines!
15
What are MLA guidelines for in-text citations?
There are several guidelines, and each one is specific to the type of source used. Book with one Author: - Either cite the author in text and the page number in parentheses. EX: According to Smith, tree pollen is the highest allergen in the United States (14). - or cite both author name and page number in parentheses. EX: Tree pollen is the highest allergen in the United States (Smith 14). - NOTE: parenthetical citations must always come before the period.

What are MLA guidelines for Works Cited list?
In MLA-style documentation, the Works Cited list gives complete bibliographic information for each source used in your paper. Include only the sources from which you quote, paraphrase, or summarize. Never include sources that you consulted but don’t refer to in the paper. Remember you must include both in-text citation and a Works Cited list in your essays
20
What are MLA guidelines for a Works Cited list?
Title: Use “Works Cited” as the title, without quotation marks. Placement of list: Start a new page numbered sequentiallly with the rest of the paper. Content and Format: Include all sources quoted from, paraphrased, or summarized in your paper. Start each entry on a new line and end at the regular left margin. If the entry uses more than one line, indent the second and all other lines five spaces from the left margin. Double-space all lines.
21
Arrangement of entries: Alphabetize by author’s last name
Arrangement of entries: Alphabetize by author’s last name. If no author is named, alphabetize by the title’s first significant work. Authors’ names: Use last names then first and use a comma after each complete name except the last, which ends with a period. Capitalization of titles: Capitalize all major words and the first and last words of all titles and subtitles. Do not capitalize articles.
22
Sample Works Cited Page
Here’s an example of what a Works Cited page looks like. This is where you’ll list all of the sources you used for your paper. Note that in MLA you should always have 1 inch margins, size 12 double spaced text. When you cite a source and the actual citation is longer than one line, you should indent like they did here in the area marked “hanging indent”
