1 FSLC Livelihood Zoning Initiative

2 Background Comprehensive mapping of the livelihoods, assets and resources is a fundamental principle in livelihood support in post-war situation No common approach in livelihood No concerted effort to consolidate data from statistical surveys and wealth of knowledge accumulated by partners Existing livelihood zones are too broad

3 Justification FSLC goal: To achieve durable improvements in food security and livelihoods Livelihood diversification Increasing productivity Building resilience to multiple and unpredictable shocks Thorough but unified mapping of the risks and vulnerabilities and opportunities needed NEAT initiative using a livelihood zoning approach has created a renewed demand for disaggregated data

4 Activities Set up a Technical committee which would help to define tools, methods and oversee field activities Generate the physiographic zone which is the basis of the current 8 livelihood zones. Use of continuous raster data to define agricultural potential and resource constraints.

5 Activities Incorporate existing information from secondary sources: national surveys, IGAD crop zoning map and other information from partners working in specific area Ground truthing at county level and market surveys. State and national level workshop.

6 Deliverables State and national food security and livelihood report.
State-level and Juba level dissemination workshop. Database with information on livelihood assets, opportunities and constraints. Market reports

7 Next steps Technical advisory team? Timeframe? Budgets?
