1 CERN Windows Roadmap Tim Bell 8th June 2011

2 Retirement Plan Scope Assumptions Windows/XP and Windows/2003
Online production servers from those groups represented here Assumptions Vista schedule is not an issue (Q stop) Office 2003 is not an issue (Q forced migration to Office 2007) XP

3 Factors to Consider Microsoft will stop all patches (including security ones) in March 2014 Compatibility issues may arise before then Active Directory Internet Explorer 9 not available but applications are now using HTML 5 features Keep spare old hardware in stock as XP support on new hardware is limited XP

4 Options Keep schedule as originally planned in Q4 2012
Not viable due to LHC schedule change IT supports XP/2003 for online production services through 2013 and online retires servers on time Standard desktop support stops as planned in Q4 2012 IT stops XP/2003 support on March 2014 when no more security patches available but servers are left running without IT infrastructure Risk that compatibility breaks with central infrastructure such as active directory Online community needs to agree protective measures with security team ? XP

6 Proposal for Windows XP
2011 Q1 Stop installation of XP on new hardware: but keep it available for old hardware IT Training Tutorials for Windows 7 + Office 2010 2011 Q3 Contact XP users to encourage migration 2012 Q4 Stop support of Windows XP at CERN Today, 950 machines have less than 2GB memory or old motherboards Assuming 5 year lifecycle, all retired by 2012 XP

7 Proposal for Office 2003 2010 Q4 2011 Q1 2011 Q3
Information campaign to 1000 PCs running Office 2003 to upgrade 2011 Q1 IT Training Tutorials on Office 2007 and 2010 User interface changes 2011 Q3 Stop support for Office 2003 Force upgrade to Office 2007 >1GB RAM is required 100 PCs which would are also not sufficient for Windows 7 XP

8 Evolution of HW - W7 Readiness
Analysis of the life time of the hardware, where Windows 7 is not supported Note: We can see that some HW stays at CERN longer than 5 years – replacement of the hardware should be planned in advance by the departments. XP

9 Evolution of HW - Memory
This is a rough prediction; beyond 2011Q2, the departments should plan to upgrade remaining hardware too old for Office 2007 XP

10 Retirement Roadmap XP
