2. Coming to America
Spain claimed the route to the Pacific around South America
Other European nations wanted to find an easier more direct route to Asia through North America

3. New France
Samuel de Champlain sailed up the St. Lawrence River and founded Quebec, this became the capital of New France
Most of the French settlers were priests or fur trappers who had little need for towns or to start families
The fur trade was the main economic activity in New France

4. Jamestown Was the 1st English settlement in North America
Got off to a bad start because the settlers were more interested in gold than in food
The settlers recovered and gained a firm foothold in America

5. New England
Some religious groups came to North America to escape persecution in England
The Pilgrims and Puritans set up colonies in order to have religious freedom
The Puritans wanted to set up a model society for all Christians to follow

6. Europeans colonize America
The Dutch and French established colonies based on commerce (to make money), they consisted of young men and very few families
The English colonies were started for religious reasons and were made mostly of families

7. Conflicts Arise
As Europeans expanded across North America, they began to run into one another
Fighting over land erupted between the Europeans
The English ran the Dutch out of North America in order to colonize the Atlantic seacoast

8. The French and Indian War
After the English ousted the Dutch, they began to move West
They collided with French holdings in North America and the two sides began to interfere with one another
This led to the French and Indian War which was part of the larger conflict known as the Seven Years War

9. The French and Indian War
The English defeated the French and pushed them North and out of the Ohio River Valley region

10. Native American Relations
The French and Dutch practiced a more cooperative policy towards Natives (the natives did the trapping and traded the fur to the French and Dutch)
The English tried to removed the natives from the land to have room to expand and they did not tolerate the natives religious differences.
