2 What makes an adult successful?
Turn to Resource 1 On the next slide there are pictures of famous adults. In pairs, discuss then write down: Who are the three most successful adults? Who are the three least successful adults?

4 Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you should be able to:
Describe the choices you could make when you leave school or college. Summarise the key facts about Higher Education using the 5 Ws List the benefits of Higher Education and explain how it could help you to become a successful adult

5 Imagine you are 18 years old and you have just left school or college.
What happens next? What are the different options open to you?

6 In groups, work together to create a spider diagram listing your different options.

7 Entry level job to “work your way up” Vocational training or
Higher Education Usually a university degree An easy job "just for now" A job to buy you some thinking time before you decide what you want to do next. Entry level job to “work your way up” A job where you hope to work hard and get promoted Vocational training or apprenticeship Training to help you get a skilled job. A gap year A one year break before going to university to travel, volunteer or work.

8 Turn to Resource 2 Think about which of the five options you think you might choose when you leave school at 18. With a partner, discuss then write down the advantages and disadvantages of this option. Which course or job do you think you might choose? If you have time, you could fill in the boxes for more than one choice.

9 When you’ve finished, number your questions!
Turn to Resource 3 With a partner, write down as many questions as you can about Higher Education which begin with each word. Higher Education Who? What? When? Where? How? When you’ve finished, number your questions!

10 If you find a question you can’t answer, write it on a post-it
Swap your questions with another group and read them. You are going to answer another group’s questions! Watch Video 1 and try to answer the questions. Click here to watch Video 1 If you find a question you can’t answer, write it on a post-it

11 Watch the video then list as many benefits of HE as you can think of.

12 Now choose one of the benefits you’ve identified and explain why it is a good thing.
