Creating interactive teaching aids to enhance student learning of pronunciation

2. rationale
To share teaching methods and activities conducted at the RTTC
To help teachers & teacher trainees create more interactive teaching aids for teaching pronunciation
To allow participants to reflect on the common mistakes in their students’ English pronunciation, and which teaching aids/activities would be most useful to them

3. interactive learning of pronunciation
Interactive learning is a more hands-on, real-world process of relaying information in classrooms1
More fun and engaging; better retention2
Production & Reception: learn to pronounce and also discriminate the different sounds in English (phonemes)3

4. Listening Dictation: Sound Cards
Method:
Teacher gives out sound cards to each student or each pair.
Teacher dictates the verbs and students raise the sound card with the correct ending sound.

5. Pair Dictation Activity:
Final Ending Sound
Method:
Student A says a word on his/her list.
Student B writes the word on his/her paper.
Check answer.
Switch roles: Student B dictates the verbs.

7. Popsicle Activity Method:
Teacher hands out a set of popsicle sticks to each student/pair/group.
Students have to arrange the popsicle sticks by matching the verb with the correct final ending sound.

9. Listening Discrimination: What’s Your Nationality?

12. Whole Class Activity: “I have… Who has…?” Method:
Each student gets a card.
The student with the first card reads his/her question out loud, “I have the first card, who has…?”
The class has to listen carefully.
The student with the correct answer card will then read his/her question out loud.
Repeat until a student reads his/her last card out loud, “Let’s play again!”
