1. Sandy Hook Memorial Monument

2. Theme/Legacy
On December 14th, 2012, video game guru Adam Lanza murdered his mother before driving to the nearby Sandy Hook elementary school and openly firing, killing 20 children and 6 adults. To escape punishment by law, he proceeded to commit suicide. The tragic events at Sandy Hook should never be forgotten, and we wish to create a memorial for all of the innocent people who were killed that day.

3. How does it connect?
For this project we were asked to design a monument related to our year(s) here at Plaza. Part of the MYP philosophy is to be aware of what is going on around you outside of your personal life. This is why we chose to plan our memorial to mourn to Sandy Hook tragedy, which we felt was an important event that happened during our year. We feel that this tragedy is more important and deserving of a monument than our personal achievements.

6. Final Plan
Our plan is to create 27 individual ceiling tiles, one for each of the victims, including Adam Lanza’s mother. The tile will have the victim’s name and painted pictures and symbols related to them, such as their favorite sports, foods, activities, etc. However, ceiling tiles don’t last forever, as we are well aware. Once the ceiling tiles are no longer fit to serve as such, they will hang on display.

7. Final Plan (Cont.)
Once all the tiles are painted they will be arranged like this and we will take a picture of it. We will then print out the picture to scale and hang it in the commons. Once the tiles need to come down, they will be hung on top of their respective place on the picture. Tiles will come down as needed, and eventually they will all hang on the picture.

Acrylic paint = around $20
Ladders = available for use through school
Paintbrushes = available for use through the art department
Ceiling Tiles = available for use through the custodial administration
