While biometric iris patterns are not as complex as vein patterns in the retina, they can be used to identify one in several million people in just seconds.
Based on the pictures taken by an infrared camera system the iris recognition algorithm maps the inner pupil-iris boarder as well as the outer edges. These are defined by the iris-sclera transition excluding eyelids and eyelashes, as well as optical reflexes.
The system produces a unique digital iris key that is compared with a reference data set to accurately identify individuals. 1
