Schematic illustration of speech breathing variables. The resting expiratory level (REL; dotted line at 40% VC) was estimated from the RIP from the end expiratory level during tidal breathing. A vital capacity (VC) maneuver is illustrated, as well as a “speech calibration breath,” a quiet breath with end inspiratory and expiratory points in the volume range used for speech. The inset illustrates a speech breath, Indicating the dependent variables: ILV = Initiation lung volume; TLV = termination lung volume; SLV = speech lung volume, an average of lung volume points sampled at 10 times per second, from ILV to TLV; volume Inspired and volume expired. The time taken from ILV to TLV in seconds is termed breath group length.
